Toshiba HD-2A
    #7588155 - 11/02/07 02:44 PM (16 years, 4 months ago)

Walmart is selling this HD-DVD player for a little less than $100.00. I might go and pick one up but am I investing money in the format that isn't going to win? Can I get a HDMI to DVI cable at Radioshack so I can use it on my monitor?

there are hdmi to dvi, i use one for my big screen. my guess is hd dvd will win in the us just b/c of the popularity of the phrase hd. kinda sad considering blue ray is the superior technology.

Most people, myself included, won't notice the difference in picture quality. Its all about profits. Another question, I'm using a 16:10 monitor at 1680x1050 resolution. Will it be able to play at this native resolution?

there is not going to be a difference in quality there. they both max out at 1080 b/c that is the highest there is anything that will display. i'll also say this, 1080 is the highest quality u'll ever need. i can see details that are unreal on my tv. i don't want a better picture than this, sometimes we already see to much. not everyone is meant to be seen in hd.

the major difference w/ B.R. vs. HD DVD is the B.R. can hold more info, so u may get more "extras" that no one watches anyway b/c they basically suck anyway.

do remember that player maxes out at 1080i. It will not display 1080p...

also, hd-dvd will probably win, as the cheapest blu-ray player is still like 400 dollars, which is fucking retarded, im hoping neither will win, and something better will come out to replace them both...probably not, but im still waiting for now...

peace

Well apparently the things sold out almost as soon as they were stocked. I'm going to check out the minority Walmart because minorities aren't as nerdy.

Have you looked at the prices of HD-DVD discs? (either for rental or purchase?).

How big of a screen do you have? Unless you have about a 42" or greater (or sit incredibly close to a TV) you will be hard-pressed to tell a difference. This is one fact a lot of people forget about this format war: Only people that own larger sets will notice a huge improvement.

i have a 52" so quality is important for me. i haven't put a blue ray or hd dvd on my tv, but just seeing the difference b/w hd and regular tv is huge.

I'm going to be using it on my 22' widescreen monitor(with a hdmi to dvi cable) with a native resolution of 1680x1050. It should look pretty good. As I said earlier I realize that I wouldn't notice this difference but I don't want to throw money into the losing format. I'll be pretty damn close to the screen seeing as how it's just a computer monitor.

If I were you, I'd download some HD content to view the difference. That way, you can determine whether the increase in quality (IF there is any) is worth risking buying a losing format.

IMO $100 is really nothing so you don't have anything to lose...

Well I went ahead and bought the HD-DVD player add-on for Xbox 360. Looks great, especially the Planet Earth Documentary by BBC. Question: I'm using the cable that allows you to hook your xbox up to your monitor so does it matter whether I have the xbox plugged into the VGA or DVI input on my monitor?

Don't quote me on this, but I don't think that VGA is capable of carrying an HD signal. I'm pretty damn sure that DVI is though.

Edit: I should have googled it first...

Quote:

the VGA cable does not unlock the 1920x1080 (1080p) resolution or any resolution near the WUXGA standard, leading us to believe that when the Xbox 360 outputs 1080i using the HD component cable, it only does the old 540p-upconvert-to-1080i trick

Does anyone know of any hd-dvd decoders or software? It is recognized and reads properly in my computer but I can't find any software. I've tried WinDVD and PowerDVD.

I think using DVI is the best.

I wasn't aware HD-DVD computer drives were available.

While I personally haven't seen any writable drives for sale in stores I did see a 5pack of writable HD-DVD's at staples the other day.

There are but mine is made for the Xbox 360 but can also be used on computer because it makes use of the USB port. There are also combo blu-ray/hd-dvd drives.
