Need help with monotubs
    #7587034 - 11/02/07 09:36 AM (16 years, 2 months ago)

I have been searching the archives and I can't find a well written TEK on monotubs and making a casing from crumbled BRF cakes. Can anyone fill me in on how this is supposed to be done?

I have found the same problem with monotubs, there isn't one single post that sums it all up.

If you want to crumble and case cakes on their own, don't bother. Just dunk and roll the cakes.

this is a good monotub tek.

instead of rye or wbs being your spawn your colonized cakes are your spawn. you'll just have to mess with the ratios

The Monstermitch monotub tek that Blood4Blood referenced is the one I used and it is very very good.

Crumble the BRF cakes and spawn them to horse poo or coir and coffee grounds (bulk substrate) at a ratio of 1 (spawn) to 3 (bulk substrate) or 1 to 4.

here is a good tek to spawning to hpoo with cakes and colonized grain. then just do one of those ratios uncle_rico posted and add that to the mono following MM's directions and your off. hope this helps.

I plan to do a coir and coffee bulk substrate. Should the coffee ground be fresh, or used? What's the best method to do this with the most sterility? Can you link me to a decent tek on this? I want to do a basic casing layer, should I use lime or oyster shells? I have never done a bulk grow before so I need you guys to walk me through the procedures if you can. Thanks.

They should be spent. Fresh coffee is way way way too acidic.

OK, I can easily get spent coffee grounds but I have no idea where to get coir. Also, what's the proper mix to use for just coffee/coir? 1:4 (hydrated)? I have 6 cakes to work with if that helps with your calculations. I just crumble up 3 of the cakes and mix it in with some of the coffee/coir mix? How do I properly sterilize/pasteurize/whatever-ize the coir and coffee prior to adding the cake crumbles? Once that's done, do I put 4 inches of perlite at the bottom of my monotub, on top of a black plastic bag? I have read what I could find in the archives but no one post spells everything out and they all have different methods. I was just wondering if this would work. Sorry about asking so many questions, I just want to make sure I do it right, my last grow was regular BRF cakes and they all got contaminated after the first flush. I bought one of those little plug in things that go into the wall and suck in air, kill the spores and shit in the air, and then spit it out the other side.

1. You can get coir at the pet store. 1:4 will work.
2. Yes, you crumble the cakes up, mix in w/ coir/coffee.
3. To pasteurize you put it all in a pillow case or similar container, put it in a pot of water and heat to around 170F for about 90 minutes just to be safe. You can probably get away w/ less.
4. Heres a monotub. Trashbag on bottom, then comes the mix of substrate. In your case coffee/coir which will have your crumbled cakes mixed in with it. After that colonizes fully, you add the casing layer (if you want one)*highly recommended.

Monotub for the win if you don't have a greenhouse.

hells yes! i cant wait to get going on a mono...

a good ratio for coffee to coir is a filters worth to 1 half brick of coir

Ok what should I use for humidity? I have an ultrasonic humidifier that I could use. I also have perlite, so either one or a combination of the two is easily doable, I just need advice.

So here's my plan, let me know what I need to tweak: (I plan on doing two of the little aluminum pans with 3 cakes crumbled into each)

Step 1. Wait for cakes to fully colonize, then wait an extra week.

Step 2. Crumble 3 cakes inside of a plastic baggie until they are the sieze of nickels, allow it to sit for a day to colonize any exposed areas.

Step 3. Put some coir into some hot water and let it soak up.

Step 4. Put (what amount?) of coir with coffee grounds equalling a 4:1 ratio of coir/coffee

Step 5. Pasteurize this mixture in some type of cloth bag (I don't want to ruin one of my pillow cases) at 170 degrees for 90 minutes.

Step 6. Wait for it all to cool down, and then mix in the cake nuggets.

Step 7. Cover it with aluminum foil and allow it to colonize fully. (what do I do about contams here? I use a dry verm layer for my cakes, but how can I get gas exchange without getting contams?

Step 8. Make a casing layer with 40% vermiculite, 50% peat (does that mean peat moss?) and 10% crushed oyster shells, hydrated lime, or calcium carbonate

Now for my monotub:

A big clear tub with a black trashbag on the bottom (How would I use perlite here?) and the two casings inside. Possibly with a humidifer, possibly not, still don't know what to do about humidity. Four big holes ABOVE the perlite/casing layer/stuff in the box. Stuff that with polyfill. I have blue (outdoor) LED lights to use for lighting. Tape down the sides of the top so nothing gets in/out. How does fresh air get into/out of the box through the polyfill? Do I need to run a fan near it? If I hook up the humidifer, I dont need the perlite and the extra air getting pushed into the box will shove some air out of the polyfill. Perhaps I should go that route? Sorry again for being so wordy, I just really want to grasp this concept fully.

EDIT: What is "patching"?

patching is filling in the spots that colonize much quicker than the rest of the tub. If you want a good tek for one search double tub by ohmatic and just take the top half off that. There's your monotub.

monstermitchs monotubs are ok..

I REALLY prefer Ohmatics method

Ohmatic's Monotubs

the reason no one has a tek for crumbled BRF tek cakes, is because BRF cakes would be considered SPAwn materials, for a bulk substrate, like manure, or coir.

you don't need to humidify a monotub, that's the beauty of it. hydrate the coir (IME throwing the coffee grounds in the water while it's hydrating helps A LOT). it's REALLY easy to get coffee grounds from local coffee shops. there are 3 within a 5 minute walk from my house, and they're always willing to give them to you. after you put the tub together, let it grow in a dark closet in a plastic garbage bag. the polyfill still allows some moisture to get out. you can kind of 'burp' the tub when you go to check on it's progress. after it's pretty well colonized, case and fruit.

the thing i love about monotubs is that you really can't screw them up.

Anyone happen to know how well mono-tubs hold up in extremely arid climates? I've been having some hard times lately humidity-wise with the usual perlite/ coolmist so I'm debating whether to do a mono-tub or invest in a ultrasonic. I'm really digging the mono tub idea though because it would be so much cheaper. The only actual problem that could mess things up would be getting FAE w/o losing Humidity.

I just ordered two more syringes from ralph

I will fruit these cakes normally and use the new syringes to make a WBS spawn. Then for my substrate, I will use coco coir + used coffee grounds. After this, I'm a bit confused. do I just pour the colonized grains evenly on top of the substrate? Do I need a wet layer of vermiculite underneath the substrate? Also what is an easy and effective casing layer to use?
