Do you ever just listen to the notes?

when someone is talking, or an advertisement on a radio station.
play that while you read this. It is a bunch of different voice overs for different commercials. Compare it with the tones of the voice on the phone.
I zone out listening to the rhythm of the notes when someone is talking to me. Say the bold sentence out loud and listen to your interpretation.
now, whenever we listen to our interpretation of someones voice in our head, I bet we are really close to the same notes. It seems to transcend regional dialects, but not languages. now our normal communication stays within perfect 5ths above or below our root.... but if you notice advertising will use octaves and sometimes up to 11th and 13th intervals (this occurs more often when sorority girls bump into friends unexpectedly in public than in commercials, but it is still advertising pretty much "BECKY! OH MY GAWD! HEY!!!"). I think a lot can be told about a person by the symphony of their vernacular. Listen to a 13 year old girl. "and I was like, no way dude, and then he like totally told me to go fuck myself" compared to some normal mature person: "so i removed my clown suit and exposed my genitals. Then she said no way dude and I told her to go fuck herself" the closer a person stays to the root of their normal speech the more calm they are. "You exposed yourself to a 13 year old!" compared to "Ill have three orders of shrimp fried rice to go please"
I turned on Comcast On Demand tonight and since it was just Halloween, there was a person telling me about all the "horror" flicks available. Newscasters and people like this fuck have to refrain from being mistaken for saying Whore, so they really go that extra mile to differentiate the two syllables.
inflection involves the loudness and pitch of speech. Think of varying situations where you would yell out "motherfucker". (er's and ed's pitch up or down very slightly, about one whole step, same goes for ing) Missed the bus: MOTHER(up high)fucker(down low) someone hit your car: MOTHER(up high)FUCKER!(even higher) someone hit your car and now you are waiting on the bus: that motherfucker (whole step pitch variance at most).

good post, most of those voice overs are absolutely horrible, i was cringing most of the way through it.
If someone talks to me and they are speaking with notes going all over the place i can hardly listen to what they are saying because most of the time i can't take them seriously.

not so much the notes of peoples' voices, but often, I can only hear the sounds people are making as opposed to the words they are forming/saying

record your voice into the machine youre working with - how many sounds would you need to recreate your voice?

This is something I have put suprisingly little thought into. Thanks for bringing it up! Now that I think of it, I realize that I tend to like people more when they speak close to thier root, and don't jump too many intervals in regular conversation. The reason commercial voices are so goddamn aggravating is that they jump between way too many pitches to try and sound more expressive. People who try to speak lower or higher than thier natural root are incredibly irritating as well. You know, like dudes that try to sound more masculine, or girls that try and sound more innocent. People who can settle comfortably into thier natural voice without force or exaggeration are generally the most likable.

Then you must be pleased with Mike Tyson's natural helium / Mickey Mouse voice.
