Former Drug Cave Is For Sale November 1, 2007 - newschannel5.com
HARTSVILLE, Tenn. - A large cave in Trousdale County once used by drug dealers is for sale.
Drug agents dismantled an underground marijuana farm in the hideout.
Now, the cave with a colorful history is about to be on the auction block.
"We have a lot of anxious people who want to see inside the cave," said Fellisha Shrum, a real estate agent with J.T. Shrum Auction and Realty.
The cave is millions of years old, but its recent past made headlines.
"It is Very unique," she said. "I think this is known as one of the most elaborate drug bust in the United States."
When asked if she thought its notoriety would be a selling point, Shrum said, "I would think so."
She is advertising the property as the Tennessee Pot Cave. One large signs for the sale read, "They grew it ... State seized it ... We Sell it!"
In 2005, agents shut down the cave and confiscated hundreds of plants. They also arrested the mastermind, a drug kingpin named Fred Strunk.
The state is auctioning the cave to the highest bidder on Dec. 8.
It isn't known how much it will sell for, but the property could command more money if home above the cave wasn't burned to the ground. The home burned last year.
Authorities suspect an arsonist burned it. A potential buyer will have to rebuild.
One feature that survived the fire was a hidden escape tunnel.
J.T. Shrum Auction and Realty has received from a variety of people including cave enthusiasts and mushroom farmers.
Free public tours will be offered on Nov. 8 and Nov. 15. For information call J.T. Shrum Auction and Realty at 666-2600.
* "Tennessee pot cave" listing.

I was thinking how it would be cool to use the caves for commercial mushroom production, like has been done across the world over the last century. It'd be kinda neat to have a cave, natural air conditioning and humidity.
Obviously others had the same idea, as it was mentioned in the article. I saw some great Lepista Nuda pictures from a cave in France, and posted them in the Gourmet forum. The farm that was growing them was calling them "pieds bleus" and it didn't look like they had to be too advanced on atmospheric controls. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/7482555/an/0/page/1

The way the drawing of it was done on the page, looks just like how my old friend wanted to make his "underground bunker". He wanted to make that thing for years.
It's real sad though, that guy is going to be in jail for most of the rest of his life, if he doesn't die before he gets out.
I hope that when the cannabis gets legalized, all the innocent weedsmokers in prison can all be freed.
You know, if you ever want to make your own house, you could probably just invest the money instead on an underground lair. It would last so long! Your decendants could live their for years and years and years.
And know how it says the guy got caught? He was stealing the electricity! All that ingenuity and planning, and he got caught of all things, stealing the electricity. How typical.
There needs to be a major breakthrough on led grow lights. People really need to get on that.
And people need to stop stealing.

Cave will serve cheeseheads, not potheads December 9, 2007 - rctimes.com
HARTSVILLE, Tenn. — The pot cave is now the cheese cave.
Or will be in the future.
Roth Käse USA Ltd., a Wisconsin-based maker of European-style cheeses, offered the highest bid Saturday at a court-ordered auction. The company bid $285,000 for seven hilly acres and the improved cave below, which for several years was home to a clandestine marijuana farm.
The company's representative at the auction, Chuck Olson, offered little comment on the purchase after the auctioneer named him the winner.
"They'll make an announcement shortly," said Olson, who smiled widely after a half-hour bidding volley between him and another would-be buyer. Asked what the company intends to do with the property, he replied coyly, "Make money."
Unlike the previous owner's business, Olson said, the cave's new enterprise will be entirely legal "in a tasty way."
The auction was held in what had been one of the underground growing rooms in a previous marijuana operation. About 170 people, the majority of them spectators, came to watch the court-ordered sale unfold about 90 feet below ground.
"It's very unusual to be selling a cave like this. This thing is built just like it's supposed to be. This man was a perfectionist, everything had to be right," said auctioneer Pete Scruggs of J.T. Shrum Auction and Realty. He was referring to Fred Strunk, the now-jailed entrepreneur who, according to authorities, was the mastermind of transforming the cave into a subterranean pot farm.
"They say he spent $750,000. Everything was just perfect. Look at the craftsmanship. A man this smart, who could do all this, he could have made an honest living, but I guess it must have been the thrill, I don't know," Scruggs philosophized to the audience before launching into his auctioneer's banter. Strunk's pot-growing operation was estimated to have brought in millions of dollars.
Opening bid confuses
Scruggs asked for a half-million-dollar bid to start, but instead, a bidder near the back offered "four fifty." That raised a number of eyebrows, including Olson sitting near the front.
After unsuccessfully trying to cajole a counteroffer from the crowd, Scruggs was in his "going once, going twice" mode when another member of the auction team told him the bidder thought he was asking for $450.
"We got us a whole lot different ball game," Scruggs replied.
When bidding restarted, three groups started out at $100,000. After the price moved over the $200,000 mark, one group dropped out, leaving only Olson and a trio of men in the back of the cave. After a lengthy discussion the trio bowed out at $285,000.
Proceeds from the sale of the cave will go to the 15th Judicial District Drug Task Force, which confiscated the property after Strunk's illegal enterprise was shut down.
"We'll use the money to fund our undercover work," said Mike "Sarge" Thompson of the drug- fighting unit.
Thompson said the auction sales price was not disappointing.
"It's right in the middle of what we thought it might sell for. I think we did pretty good."

of course its not disapointing, they stole it.
This is bullshit, if anything, this money should go to the state treasury.
