question about drug laws overseas
    #7585831 - 11/01/07 10:07 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

I've noticed some posts from people in the UK and elsewhere saying that they were caught selling drugs and getting off with community service (can't remember who that was). What are drug laws like in other countries as compared to America?

Let's see, if you get caught WITH drugs (including marijuana) in America:

You can have your drivers license taken away
You cannot receive financial aid for college
You may be expelled from your university
You may definitely face jail time/ a year of probation with drug testing and mandatory rehab (gag)
You have a permanent record and may/probably will be denied employment
You can NEVER in any capacity work with children
If you have a child, the child will be taken away contingent on some circumstances (relatively harsh ones... I've known this to happen to people)
If you are caught selling or even possessing marijuana, you can never become a public accountant, doctor, or lawyer, because you are barred from entrance/finishing exams
Depending on severity, you are also barred from graduate school entrance exams
If you are a lawyer you will be disbarred
You cannot work for the government
You cannot receive ANY aid from the government
You can be evicted from your property if the drugs were found in your property
If you are living in government housing, you WILL be kicked out
If you are convicted with more than two felony charges (which is a pretty fucking easy charge to draw) you will be sentenced to a mandatory minimum of 25 years, and a maximum of life in prison.
Even if you get deferred adjudication for being a first time offender, complete probation/rehab, and the charge is wiped from your record, your conviction STILL shows up on your record

I'm missing a few. But a good deal of this is for simple marijuana offenses. Does this happen in other countries as well? What are the penalties AFTER you are convicted, serve time, and attend probation?

BTW the average time a non violent drug felon spends in jail is five years, the same as the average time for manslaughter..... How much time can you expect if you get caught with say, a couple pounds or a bunch of mushrooms?

and soon any drug offender in the US will be summarily declared an "enemy combatant" under the provisons of the MCA and lose their right to a trial-by-jury altogether...and mind you that the provisions of the MCA dont even require any evidence either...if the say your guilty..then your guilty..period...

Wow, nothing but repression, repression and repression. The US is such a Christian nation and one of the values of Christianity is 'forgiveness'. Obviously the US drug policy is not based on that.
In Europe we say "God forgives, Americans don't". America's drug policy clearly reflects this.
