Red Hot Chili Peppers suck ass.
    #7585224 - 11/01/07 07:06 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

true story.

Especially Anthony Keidas. How can you claim someone is copying you when you had demo tapes out at the same time?
Atleast Mr Bungle had three very distinctive albums that covered almost every genre and were so ahead of their time we still havent caught up to them.
RHCP has made the same songs on the same fucking albums for the last 20 years. Absolute fucking losers.

I have heard worse,
(bands named Kiss and AC/DC...as a few examples)I still like some of thier songs.
But they must be rich losers then, someone has bought thier music and went to thier concerts.

hard to believe nobody's sticking up for them... hell i like 'em. i own almost all their albums... i don't know what the hell you're talking about '20 years of the same music' i flat don't agree they went from brassy punk funk (freaky styley) to radio rock (californication) and bloodsugarsexmagik is a classic... they're also really intriguing live with john frusciante back in the mix, now his solo albums those suck

I bought one cd from them, it was Blood, sugar, sex majik..i think that was the name of it.
But it had a few good songs on there...a few. I think I lent it out to someone..but I don't miss it at all.

the RHCP are an excellent, innovative band. They took funk and punk and mayhem and made an entirely new genre. The kick ass .

Mr. Bungle is fun and interesting, but pound for pound the chilis are way way more listenable. Thats what music is all about imo. I value music that makes you feel good.

BloodSugarSexMagik was excellent.

Californication was listenable.

Everything else was :shake:

You are doubly wrong here.
1) if you think that they were the pioneers of funk rock, you need to get out more.
2) Mr Bungle is one of the greatest bands of the last 20 years. Merely because their music isnt bumped by throwback radio stations doesnt mean that they are unlistenable. I play Bungle every single night at my venue and I often have people coming up and asking me with awe "what band is this?".
3) Music isnt supposed to be just listenable. Granted, it is an aspect of music, but it ultimately is the transcending of literal communication to convey concepts, thought processes, perspectives and emotions.
Mr bungle does that more effortlessly than any other band I have heard. Just listen to Disco Volenta from Disco Volenta. It is a modern day opera, and every single song was delicately recorded in black box situations to create the "scenery" of the song. You imagine a caged animal in a dark cave violently stirring as pattons vocals melt out into the darkness and are echoed back by the screams of the damned.
so you were right, bungle isnt as "listenable" as RHCP.... it is quite more textured and complex than that.

understandably people are going to be not fans of the music. so say they suck ass would be taking it a bit far i'd say. im sure alot of people think mr.bungle sucks ass. dosnt mean theyre right. i think the peppers have come a long way and have influenced alot of people. have they completely revolutionized music? no. but all in all they write good music. From the time i've spent on here i've never really noticed you to be much of an in-the-middle kind of guy YA, but sometimes music is just meant to be fun to listen to

there are two types of art. Pop art and fine art.
Pop art is instant gratification, often cliche, appeals to low intelligence, or atleast people who would rather think over the noise than think/experience it. It is something to pass the time, to put your brain on auto-pilot while you clean the house.
This is where RHCP falls.

Fine art is an exploration into the infinite capabilities and facets of existence.
For example.... take this next summers Thriller Blockbuster.... in the end, everything eventually has to be spelled out to the audience. "You mean, You arent my father, and my mother died at birth, and...." etc. and then movies like "crash" that allow the viewer to come to their own conclusions... there is an internal cognition that occurs and it becomes an enlightening experience rather than trying to transcend boredom.

I'm more of a fan of Frusciante, but I do own many RHCP albums. I don't agree when someone said his (Frusciante's) albums suck. Check out 'Inside of Emptiness'. It is more conventional than the stuff you might be thinking sucks.

cheesy? boring? have you even listened to Bungle? or are you just trying to get away with some vague description so it sounds like you know what you are talking about?

also, Flea sucks ass at the bass. he isnt even original, it is nothing but Bootsy rip offs.

I think I wholeheartedly agree with you on this YA.  I also used to be into the Chili Peppers quite a bit but somewhere around Californication I pretty much stopped giving a crap.  Bloodsugarsexmajik was a really good album from what I remember (it's been a while) and they've done a whole bunch of songs that I've really enjoyed.  Under the Bridge, Fight Like a Brave, Suck My Kiss, Knock Me Down, they were all really good songs but they've pretty much fallen off as far as I'm concerned.  I know the last couple songs that they've done videos for really didn't move me in any way whatsoever.

Mr. Bungle, on the other hand, has always been more diversified and innovative IMO.  I still listen to the album with Love Is a Fist, My Ass Is On Fire and The Girls of Porn all the time.  It really never gets old to me.  Of course it doesn't hurt that I was always a big fan of Faith No More and Patton's vocal range in general.  I remember I used to have Disco Volante too but now I'm mad because I don't know what happened to it.

Anyway, effin' a man, good call!

Why can't the kid rocking out to system of a down be having a profound experience? From a certain perspective, its all the same thing. All of us are animals with emotions, and certain sights and sounds push certain buttons in all of us. Its not the objective value of the art that matters, its what it does to the individual that counts. And RHCP have made millions rock out for twenty years. They fucking rock, the masses like them, that's a GOOD thing.

It is a progression. no one starts out liking the obscure bands that never got/get airplay. It takes a refining of taste and a finer appreciation.
If all art is on a level playing field, then why dont you watch telletubbies and pokemon? they are just as intellectually stimulating and fulfilling as anything else you could spend your time watching.

Quote:

Why can't the kid rocking out to system of a down be having a profound experience? From a certain perspective, its all the same thing.

So, you dont have any albums that you liked when you were very young that you rock out to now?
Like I said before, there is a progression. 10 years ago, you were bumping Sisqo's "thong song", telling all your friends.... and generally Rawking Out to it.... would you do the same today? Would you pull out and admit that you liked Debbie Gibson when you were 8 years old? have you grown as an individual, and refined your tastes, or would you still have the same emotional attachment and awe that you did for Debbie Gibson?
This is why I believe that artistic taste can be objectified to a degree. What will stick around for you for life. Are you going to feel the same way about RHCP your entire life, are you going to mature beyond your present self and look back and say "Man, I listened to some shitty music back then".... or at the very best say "Dude, play that RHCP, Im feeling nostalgic, i used to love this shit back in the day".... it still doesnt have that emotional captivation that you spoke of.
I think our individual awe of certain bands of certain genres during certain periods of our life is subjective, but if you truly continue to refine your taste, you will find that Mr Bungle is a group that has produced some very exquisite art.... art that is far better than a group of shirtless heroin addicts rapping over the same tired generic funk bassline could produce.
I think that most people cannot discern art appreciation and entertainment and this is where they begin to think that the music and movies they like, are really good art.... which is sad, because they are usually wrong.
and I am sure some of you will say that entertainment is art.... and yes, it is, but in that sense, it is technical procedure that gives it the qualitative state.
For example: Comedy.
Now, jokes are entertainment. Delivery is the art.
Anyone can tell this or that joke.... that isnt art. Not everyone can tell that joke and make an auditorium full of people laugh hysterically and keep the flow into the next joke. That is an art form.

if you need anymore examples, I will be happy to provide them. In case this post didnt entirely prove to you that there is an objective difference between fine art and bullshit art.

yeah, ok, we cannot objectively say that RHCP sucks, but we can objectively say that they are nothing more than mindless entertainment of self indulgent cliches wrapped in a tremendous ego.... which IOW means you suck.

Quote:

Mr. Bungle is known to have had a bad relationship with the Red Hot Chili Peppers' frontman Anthony Kiedis.[2] The feud began when Kiedis saw singer Mike Patton performing with Faith No More and accused him of imitating his style. Kiedis stated “Yeah I watch that 'Epic' video, and I see him jumping up and down, rapping, and it looked like I was looking in the mirror. The thing is, I had no problem with him personally. I mean, I love 'The Real Thing,' and I liked his vocals on that record. I mean, when I heard the record I noticed subtle similarities, but when I saw that video it was like, 'Wait a second here, what the fuck?".[2] Mike Patton and Mr. Bungle took offense to Kiedis' comment, sarcastically threatening Kiedis in the press. In the early nineties, Patton met with Kiedis; the two were polite to each other and the feud seemed to have ended.[2]

However, in 1999 Mr. Bungle's album California was scheduled to be released on June 8, but their label, Warner Bros. Records, pushed it back so as not to coincide with the Red Hot Chili Peppers similarly titled album, Californication, which was to be released on the same day. This appeared to reignite the old feud with Kiedis having Mr. Bungle removed from a series of summer festivals in Europe; as the headlining act at the festivals The Chili Peppers had final word on the bands that would appear.[2][28] Patton stated “Our agent was in the process of booking these festivals, and it was becoming apparent that we'd landed some pretty good ones—one in France, another one in Holland, some big-name festivals. Turns out someone's holding a grudge! We were booted off several bills, including a really big festival in Australia, specifically because Anthony Kiedis did not want us on the bill. He threatened to pull the Chili Peppers if Mr. Bungle was on the bill. Now, rationalize that one! That's so fucking pathetic! I mean, this guy's selling a million records! We are not even a speck of dust on this guy's ass! What's the fucking problem?"[54] Trey Spruance added "We were booked, months in advance, to do eleven festival dates in Europe. Come Summer, we get a call from the three biggest of those festivals, all of them the same day, saying that we can't play, because the headlining band retains the right to hire and fire whomever they wish. We found out it was the Red Hot Chili Peppers, so our manager called their manager to find out what the hell was going on, and their manager was very apologetic, and said, 'We're really sorry, we want you to know this doesn't reflect the management's position, or the band's for that matter, it's Anthony Kiedis who wants this.'"[55]

As a result, Mr. Bungle parodied the Red Hot Chili Peppers in Detroit, Michigan on Halloween of 1999. Patton introduced each Mr. Bungle band member with the name of one of the Red Hot Chili Peppers before covering the songs Give It Away, Around The World, Under the Bridge and Scar Tissue, with Patton deliberately using incorrect lyrics. Mr. Bungle also satirized many of the mannerisms of the band, mocking heroin injections and on-stage antics. Kiedis responded by having them removed from the 2000 Big Day Out festival in Australia and New Zealand,[2][28] stating “I would not have given two fucks if they played with us there, but after I heard about some Halloween show where they mocked us and read another interview where Patton talked shit about us, and I was like, you know what, fuck him and fuck the whole band."[2]

The feud continued with Dunn describing the Chili Peppers on his personal webpage as "that stupid white band that does horrible cover versions of black musicians". He also criticized their bass player Flea stating "Flea, in all seriousness, really isn't that good. I mean c'mon Red Hot Chilli Peppers were vaguely interesting in the late 80s, but Christ they fucking suck, they suck".

I don't know anything of this Mr. Bungle shit.
In fact, I don't even know any Mr. Bungle stuff.
I do, however, enjoy the Peppers.
Californication being my favorite album, because it was big around the time I would have started getting into them (and broadening my music horizons in general.)
Their newest CD blows in my opinion.

I have to agree with YawningAnus. Some bands have more artistic merit than others. However, not everyone listens to music for it's artsy side. As a rule of thumb, with occasional exceptions, anything that gets mainstream radio airplay is fairly simple music with no real merit to it (Exceptions could be Jimi Hendrix, Tool for example.)

And it's not black and white either. There are different levels of good-musicness. I wish I had time to sit down and make a chart. Overall merit of the band would be based on certain criteria such as originality, complexity, difficulty, cultural significance or something. Bands like Insane Clown Posse being the lowest on the scale. RHCP wouldn't be very high, but they would still be decent. Music is art, and let's face it, some art is just better than others. Subjectivity plays a part, but there is much more to it.

Also, I have to agree with the music appreciation bit. Years ago, music that I thought sucked blows my mind. And it's not because my tastes have changed, it's because they grew. And once you get to a certain point, you can skillfully discern the real musicians from the fake ones. You can also acknowledge a band's talent and significance even if you totally detest their music. Mr.Bungle is a perfect example of top notch music. Even if you don't like listening to them, you should be able to acknowledge how incredibly original and amazing their super-complex collage of sound is. Another album that requires quite a bit of musical appreciation is Catch 33 by Meshuggah. You might laugh, but it's an incredible piece of music.

What is it about obscure/unsigned bands that inherently makes them superior to popular bands?  That they're obscure?  Unsigned?  Or is it that being hip to them makes their fans feel smarter, more "refined?"

I just don't see why all music should be judged against the standard of "good/fine art."

Getting a stadium of people together and providing them with an awesome communal experience is most definitely an art form.  Its not easy to do, or every obscure band would be playing bigger shows.  The reason obscure bands are obscure is because they only appeal to a narrower slice of personalities.  Just like RHCP appeals to a certain personality type.  Neither is inherently "smarter" or more "refined," they're just into different things.

Find what fits you and groove to it, and to hell with all the bullshit!

The red hot chili peppers were actually pretty ahead of their time when they came out, it was trashy punk funk with anthony keidis rapping out lyrics. they had an edge they were new and great. i'd say their comeback is where they are lacking. Bye the way had a couple of good songs, but that new double disc album is just pure shit.

mr bungle is far more innovative, i have to agree, there was no limit to what they could do. Mike Patton is a genius, but in all fairness Peeping Tom? what a fucking joke that is. I mean you'd think with Rahzel on his side they would've come out with something just as innovative. but they didn't and that Peeping Tom album SUCKS.

Chili peppers have been the same band for at least the last 15-20 years. and they managed for 20 years straight to come up with good solid albums. Mr. Bungle lasted how long? "mothers milk" is a fantastic album. i think its better than any other one. The early "freaky styley" stuff and "uplift party mofo plan" are pretty awesome playful exciting albums and they were pretty ahead of their time, no one else really had that sound. So although mr. bungles stuff is certainly edgier and innovative, you gotta keep in mind that mr. bungle was a side project that didn't last too long.

well, the guitarists started on seven string guitars, which has one bass string(the low B of course)

then for the later albums they created this

oh i understand what youre saying.. since the guitars had that many strings they had to go that low and add a bass string..

and maybe higher on the other end of the spectrum past the high e as well? dunno cus ive only used 6 string guitars. but i would think itd be cool trying one out with more strings

YA you are full of it. How long have you been listening to music?

I still listen to the stuff I liked 20 years ago. Stop pretending that you've had this great musical growth and how everyone else is just below you and doesn't have good taste.

I am willing to bet that I've heard much more music and much more diversity in music than you have. Elitist attitude is what ruins art for nobody else but you. You are limiting your appreciation because of some silly things not pertaining to to the art itself. Mr Bungle and RHCP both have merit, they both appeal to audiences, they both do what they do best. You should be thankful that we do have this diversity and you can sit back and enjoy your 'cool distinctive' sound of Bungle and other can go to a huge arena and get their heads blown off by RHCP.

The only reason you are hating is because of what one guy said about some band. That shows how much you really care about art of it all. Remove the people from the picture, art is art only when you forget about the baggage that comes with it, otherwise it's just another human drama.

I'm just sayin'... my RHCP collection stopped after Californication. Wasn't rockin' enough for me.

I still listen to new stuff by bands that ppl keep saying sold out and sound like shit now that they've passed their hayday.. I don't care:

Rancid, Green Day, Social Distortion.

This whole thread reeks of elitism.  Pop art vs fine art... what a load of horseshit.  There are a thousand different qualities people enjoy about their music, and nobody's preferences are objectively more 'fine' than others.

Remove the people from the picture, art is art only when you forget about the baggage that comes with it, otherwise it's just another human drama.

yeah, there is no higher or better opinion. opinions are perspectives of which none are objective. everything is subjective. and we favor what we like ... we're all different... we have different taste... no one opinion is any better than another's... and this statement is an opinion which is no better than any other; it is just another opinion.

when did I say anything of the sort? I dont consider my musical taste to be the pinnacle of musical taste.... but I will say that it is better than most of you guys.
Yeah, i am a music snob. so what?
And I never said that everything you used to listen to will fall by the wayside. The first band I liked was the Beach boys when I was 8. But I only liked their cheesy pop stuff. As I became ridiculed by my friends for liking the beach boys, I dropped them, only to rediscover them years later through wild honey/smiley smile and found a much deeper appreciation for them.

I dont care if you are 90 years old, that statement isnt true. I run live sound 13 out of every 14 days, and each day I run on average 3 bands, and sometimes as much as 6 or 7 in a night.
not to mention that I am a fairly avid festival and concert goer.
and why does this thread have to become about me? I set out some very salient points about art appreciation, yet all I get is ad hominems and people saying "nuh-uh, its subjective".

Quote:

Like I said before, It is progression. Give a dog nothing but shit food all its life, and it knows no better... it never refines its literal taste. Give that dog some steak and its eyes are opened wide, and it reveals its shitty mush for what it really is. shitty.

Quote:

not really. I hated RHCP before I read about the bungle RHCP feud, but reading about it merely gave me enough motivation to make this thread.
Can you really say there is no possible way of saying that Chick Corea is better than Nickelback? that jaco pastorius is better than Linkin Park? that King Crimson is better than Blink 182? that Frank Zappa is better than lil mama? that Quincy Jones is better than Puddle of Mudd?

would you say that a 60 year old man is a snob when he tells you exactly how you are going to change and feel about certain subjects later on in life, like children, marriage etc?
it is a progression, and it takes experience to get to that point. People always ask me how I find such crazy good music, and I just tell them "you when someone tells you to check this or that band out? well, I actually do it".
So, you call it pretentious, I call it passing on knowledge.

The RHCP are ok.. other than californication nothing is really that special. But John Frusciante will probably always be one of my favorite guitarists
