I have to agree with YawningAnus. Some bands have more artistic merit than others. However, not everyone listens to music for it's artsy side. As a rule of thumb, with occasional exceptions, anything that gets mainstream radio airplay is fairly simple music with no real merit to it (Exceptions could be Jimi Hendrix, Tool for example.)
And it's not black and white either. There are different levels of good-musicness. I wish I had time to sit down and make a chart. Overall merit of the band would be based on certain criteria such as originality, complexity, difficulty, cultural significance or something. Bands like Insane Clown Posse being the lowest on the scale. RHCP wouldn't be very high, but they would still be decent. Music is art, and let's face it, some art is just better than others. Subjectivity plays a part, but there is much more to it.
Also, I have to agree with the music appreciation bit. Years ago, music that I thought sucked blows my mind. And it's not because my tastes have changed, it's because they grew. And once you get to a certain point, you can skillfully discern the real musicians from the fake ones. You can also acknowledge a band's talent and significance even if you totally detest their music. Mr.Bungle is a perfect example of top notch music. Even if you don't like listening to them, you should be able to acknowledge how incredibly original and amazing their super-complex collage of sound is. Another album that requires quite a bit of musical appreciation is Catch 33 by Meshuggah. You might laugh, but it's an incredible piece of music.

Either way, for a joke album, it's pretty fucking amazing. It's like a maze in music form. I get baked and listen to it with earphones and milkdrop. Man, it makes me feel like a robot.

YawningAnus said: It is a progression. no one starts out liking the obscure bands that never got/get airplay. It takes a refining of taste and a finer appreciation.
What is it about obscure/unsigned bands that inherently makes them superior to popular bands? That they're obscure? Unsigned? Or is it that being hip to them makes their fans feel smarter, more "refined?"

YawningAnus said: I think that most people cannot discern art appreciation and entertainment and this is where they begin to think that the music and movies they like, are really good art.... which is sad, because they are usually wrong.
I just don't see why all music should be judged against the standard of "good/fine art."
Getting a stadium of people together and providing them with an awesome communal experience is most definitely an art form. Its not easy to do, or every obscure band would be playing bigger shows. The reason obscure bands are obscure is because they only appeal to a narrower slice of personalities. Just like RHCP appeals to a certain personality type. Neither is inherently "smarter" or more "refined," they're just into different things.
Find what fits you and groove to it, and to hell with all the bullshit!

The red hot chili peppers were actually pretty ahead of their time when they came out, it was trashy punk funk with anthony keidis rapping out lyrics. they had an edge they were new and great. i'd say their comeback is where they are lacking. Bye the way had a couple of good songs, but that new double disc album is just pure shit.
mr bungle is far more innovative, i have to agree, there was no limit to what they could do. Mike Patton is a genius, but in all fairness Peeping Tom? what a fucking joke that is. I mean you'd think with Rahzel on his side they would've come out with something just as innovative. but they didn't and that Peeping Tom album SUCKS.
Chili peppers have been the same band for at least the last 15-20 years. and they managed for 20 years straight to come up with good solid albums. Mr. Bungle lasted how long? "mothers milk" is a fantastic album. i think its better than any other one. The early "freaky styley" stuff and "uplift party mofo plan" are pretty awesome playful exciting albums and they were pretty ahead of their time, no one else really had that sound. So although mr. bungles stuff is certainly edgier and innovative, you gotta keep in mind that mr. bungle was a side project that didn't last too long.

well, the guitarists started on seven string guitars, which has one bass string(the low B of course)
then for the later albums they created this

oh i understand what youre saying.. since the guitars had that many strings they had to go that low and add a bass string..
and maybe higher on the other end of the spectrum past the high e as well? dunno cus ive only used 6 string guitars. but i would think itd be cool trying one out with more strings

Especially Anthony Keidas. How can you claim someone is copying you when you had demo tapes out at the same time? Atleast Mr Bungle had three very distinctive albums that covered almost every genre and were so ahead of their time we still havent caught up to them.
Are the RHCP talking shit about Mr Bungle or something?
Bess get Faith No More to put some foots up them thar asses.

YA you are full of it. How long have you been listening to music?
I still listen to the stuff I liked 20 years ago. Stop pretending that you've had this great musical growth and how everyone else is just below you and doesn't have good taste.
I am willing to bet that I've heard much more music and much more diversity in music than you have. Elitist attitude is what ruins art for nobody else but you. You are limiting your appreciation because of some silly things not pertaining to to the art itself. Mr Bungle and RHCP both have merit, they both appeal to audiences, they both do what they do best. You should be thankful that we do have this diversity and you can sit back and enjoy your 'cool distinctive' sound of Bungle and other can go to a huge arena and get their heads blown off by RHCP.
The only reason you are hating is because of what one guy said about some band. That shows how much you really care about art of it all. Remove the people from the picture, art is art only when you forget about the baggage that comes with it, otherwise it's just another human drama.
