Joint pain while running

Hey runners: do you ever experience pain in your joints while running? Is there anything I can do to alleviate the pain, like special stretches or anything? I was running today and the joint on my thigh bone (is there a joint there? it's not the hip bone, but around my thigh) started to really hurt and I had to switch to walking.
Any advice? I was hoping maybe there were some natural herbs I could take to ease my joints.

Do you get enough fats in your diet? And where do you run? Running on concrete is pretty bad. Running on treadmills/track can still put some wear on your joints.
I substituted my running with eliptical-ing (I have shin splints, or developing shin splints) and it's been going pretty good.

Uh, my diet fluctuates between fasting on juices/water and then eating fruits and vegetables, with the occasional plunge into carbs and sugers. I'm trying to add more fats though, somehow. But last night I ate some nuts and got a swollen throat. Maybe if I drank more soy...
I run in a gym on a treadmill.

glucosamine and chdroitnin suplements really helped me. Yeah getting enough fat is also very important. If you have a hard time getting it in your diet then go ahead and suplement. I would reccomend Udo's 3-6-9 Oil Blend. It has all your omega fatty acids in the perfect ratio for the body. It comes as a liquid and is really good served over rice or put into a smoothie. Or you could just take it straight from the bottle, very nutty flavor too it. Anyways hope I could help.

If you are having problems with fats, try cooking with some oils sometimes. Or work some dairy into your diet. Or even just start taking fish oil caps.
I'm a firm beleiver in fat. Since I switched my diet to 65% calories from fat and dropped carbs I've never been better.

Dropped carbs? Completely?
What kinds of foods do you eat mostly?

I dropped carb dense foods completely except for one day of the week where I do a refeed.
Usually I eat all kinds of meats, nuts, oils, and many vegetables sans the more carb dense ones. Like I'll eat spinach, onions, asparagus, egg plant etc.. but not peas, potatoes, carrots and all that. Except of course on my refeed days. I also used to eat dairy but I think I'm lactose intolerant.
You can read more about the diet I follow here: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/forumdisplay.php?f=61
The reason I follow it is because I believe it to be healthier, and I feel much better on it. Some people just run better on fat as a source of energy than carbohydrates. We have better moods throughout the day, better energy, less pain, better focus, etc. Lots of people still haven't adapted to eating carbs.
Then of course there is the boost in fat loss which is nice.

Try hemp seed / flax / coconut oils... full of long chain fatty acids and super delicious. Goes great in smoothies or over any food. There is a hemp seed milk product out there, but again they use synthetic vitamins. The down side to the oils i mentioned is that they seem kind of expensive... but for around 15$ I got a 16 oz. bottle of flax oil that lasted about 2 months, eating 1 tbsp (the recommended serving size) per day (or so).

Do you stretch?
I ran long distance throughout high school and got back into it after college. I get shin splints (splits) and stuff sometimes and stiffness but never pains like that.
I heard somewhere that running long distance actually makes you less flexible. I don't know if it's true or not.

Hey guys! Thanks for all the advice, it was all helpful, and Clean I especially appreciated the flax/hemp/coconut oil reminder. Hmm...
I ran today and I figured out that it's not a joint, it's a muscle, and it only causes intense pain at the end of my workout, probably when it's tired. I did extra stretches at the beginning and that seemed to help, in addition to stretching afterwards too. Must remember to keep stretching before and after.
As for flexibility, I do yoga too, so that helps.

Long Distance running tends to make you less flexible over time. The more you run, the more important it is to stretch.
If only I could follow my OWN advice
