I've personally only used e-gold and my experience so far has been really frustrating.
I don't know anything at all about e-bullion but from personal experience so far, the e-gold thing really turned me off and left a sour taste in my mouth.

Surely. It's funny I saw this thread because this all just happened today, this morning to be exact.
I just signed up and have a brand new account with e-gold. (I originally signed up because I was ordering some questionable items and the site only accepted e-gold now)
So once you have an account, you have to load it with currency. This seems easy enough.
But almost ALL of the sites used to do this ONLY accept wire transfer or western union to load it with money. Fuck that. Fees alone cost over $10.
When I finally found a site that lets you load money to your e-gold account using a credit or debit card, that part of the site didn't work.
The whole thing was a mess. I just gave up with it. I still have my e-gold account, but I don't really plan on using it.
And to clear things up, I'm not a dumbass or idiot with computers or the internet.
You know I just was using it so I could buy some shit that I really don't need anyway and could ever get in trouble for buying so I just said, fuck it.
Overall the experience sucked. At least I didn't lose any money.

I don't see how e-gold could be any safer when you are loading your account with a credit card.

Most e-gold sites let you use money orders, or at least they used to.

The international monetary/economic system is based on promises, and this whole system may fall soon.
If you're truly interested in hopping on the gold bandwagon, buy physical gold, and not the promise of gold.
Check GATA, half the gold being traded doesn't even exist.
If you hop on the gold bandwagon it means you're hopping off the bandwagon of empty promises. Take physical posession of it and store it in a safe deposit box. When the dollar tanks and the banks explode like a string of firecrackers, the content of safe deposit boxes still is yours, whereas you'd lose any currency in an account.
Bullion coins like Krugerrands and Canadian Gold Maples can be bought anonymously at coin shops or by insured mail order from trusted online sources. And it's compact too: $10.000 in gold comfortably fits in your hand.

Can't you use a fake name on some of them?

The only think I like about cash $ better than gold is that cash can't be picked up with a metal detector like if you were to bury it and move it through airports.
and
make sure to buy some guns and tons of ammo to protect your gold cause shit ain't going to be pretty when banks crash. \
i definitely would NOT trust a safe deposit box over a hole I dug myself on private property owned by myself

Why not? Other than the fact that almost anywhere you go you are being video recorded? No ID is required to buy many of the available Visa Gift Cards. You can then register them in any name you want to any address you want. So other than reviewing the video footage (if it exists) of a card being sold, why are they not anonymous?

if you want to use one online they typically make you register the card with your name and confirm it. if you use it locally it is anonymous.

I'm not sure about a "Gift Card", as I was referring to the prepaid debit cards, like Visa has through Wal*Mart, unless that is what you mean...
Anyways, to answer your question, they wouldn't be anonymous unless you could somehow fake a social security number and birth-date and have it correspond to a fake name...

egold is under current investigation by the United States Government.
I would advise caution and use it anonymously if in the future anything happens.

The visa gift cards that are available are completely anonymous if you want them to be.
The ones I've heard of are called Simon visa gift cards, and they can be purchased at many malls across the country. You can use these in stores locally without registering them.
If you want to use it online, you logon to their website and fill out any name and address info you want. This is now your billing info and name. No SSN required, and there is no verification of any sort.
If you paid for the card in cash, it is completely anonymous. Oh yeah, you'd also need to register the card from an ip that isn't yours if you are worried about ip logging.
I have a feeling that in the coming years cards like this won't exist at all, so use them while you can.
Oh yeah, these cards are not reloadable. They are about 5 bucks each, and you can get them up to $500 per card I think.
