Moving to another country
#7581448 - 10/31/07 04:08 PM (16 years, 3 months ago) |

My mind is all over the place lately. I have been thinking about moving to another country...all on my own. Which place would be the cheapest and safest? Iceland maybe? Or India? Or a country in South America?
I need a big change in my life, location wise, and nothing in the US seems to fit. I am starting to think I should just go to another country altogether. I don't want to go to Canada. I want to leave the continent.
Has anyone ever done this? Any advice? What kind of job could I get in another country to support myself? Help...

I think I'm going to get a few books on various countries that I am interested in living in and then just research the shit out of it. I will try to save at least 5,000$ for the move. Do you think this is a reasonable estimate? Actually now that I think I want to do this, I feel so much better inside. A true adventure may be in store for me.

Depends on what you want to do with your life. Morocco, Nepal, Northern India, Cyprus and Peru have always held an appeal for me.

save your money fast - with the rate the US dollar's depreciating, by the time you get there you're USD5000 will be worth about 100 euro

I wish you the best of luck, but I would ask you to think deeply about what your motivation is. I often have great fantasies about leaving everything behind and starting over in a new place. And maybe my problem is that I haven't followed through! But I think more likely this is my mind turning the present into something to be gotten away from by creating some exciting future in an unknown environment. People are the same everywhere. You still have your body anywhere you go. And you still have your personal history and conditioning. So it could be that you'll move somewhere else and feel very happy about it for awhile, only to find that a lot of the same patterns are being played out in your interaction with reality. That isn't a bad thing, just something to consider. My advice is to think deeply about whether a move is something you need, or whether it is just another way for you to maintain a sense of separateness and a false identity based on your life situation. I haven't talked to you really but from your posts I consider you a very wise person, so I bet you'll be fine wherever you end up, and I'm really curious as to where that will be!
-------------------- “Strengthened by contemplation and study, I will not fear my passions like a coward. My body I will give to pleasures, to diversions that I’ve dreamed of, to the most daring erotic desires, to the lustful impulses of my blood, without any fear at all, for whenever I will— and I will have the will, strengthened as I’ll be with contemplation and study— at the crucial moments I’ll recover my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

I moved to the Netherlands from the states about two months ago. I wanted to change the direction of my life that I was leading home in the states. I think I have somewhat done that. I miss everything though. I keep wanting to go back.
My advice to you would be, after choosing a country that suits you start learning the language before even stepping foot there. Getting a job in a foreign country without being able to speak the language is a 100% failure believe me I know. You also have to ask yourself where you are going to stay. 5,000 dollars won't last you forever even in a poorer country mostly because of exchange rates. Think about what you do now job wise and ask yourself if its relevant to the country.
Learn the language first. Look for a job now. Look for a home third.
You might want to think of it as a vacation at first. I don't want to tell you are going to fail, because no matter what might happen it is a positive and utterly euphoric learning experience. However, if for what ever reason things don't happen, you'll want a place to come back to.
Keep us informed!

MOTH, I don't mean to criticize, but I constantly see you looking for change. It seems like you're addicted to it, and are never satisfied with the way things are. Ever think of looking for inner change? If you keep looking for happiness outside yourself, I doubt you'll ever find it.

My standard answer is Amsterdam despite the fact that I've never been there. Check out my "Stability vs. Amsterdam" thread from almost 3 years ago. I was seriously considering moving away from the US because I felt angry about the fact that my spiritual sacraments were against the law. I'm still angry about that, but I know now that I'm far away from being able to leave my friends and family.

I feel like I'm constantly looking for inner AND outer change. The two are one in the same. The outer is a reflection of the inner and vice versa. So yes, maybe I'm looking for change inside and out constantly.
Yes, a part of me wants to find a point of stability.
but, where, and how? I don't know the answers to these questions. I just want to experience, and experience and experience. I don't know how to stop myself from doing that, really. I am a creature of change. What's the problem with that?
Well, I don't get anywhere. So I'd like to settle down, but my soul craves constant adventure and travel. So what to do? Suggestions welcome based on what I just said, not what you know of my post history.

Just make sure you really really want to move before you do. I recently moved to the UK and I've been a lot less happy since i got here 5 months ago. I just doesn't feel right to me.

But...I want to be immersed in something different. What about a 3 month vacation? That's something I was considering...a long-ass vacation during the summer rather then moving my life completely.

Also, from going to different festivals, I found many artists and artisans(and dealers) live a rather nomadic lifestyle, traveling from place to place selling their wares. If you could learn some craft like glassblowing, making jewelry, or something along those lines, you might be able to do something like that.

I think language is an important factor if you want to move somewhere. It takes ages to learn a language, and even when you get pretty good at it, you can still be at a disadvantage compared to the locals when it comes to getting a job. Also if i was planning on living somewhere, i would find a place with the highest standard of living index. There are some really cool countries out there, with governments who actually care about the people and social welfare. Like Sweden, i think it has free health care, free education, free childcare and proper social security for if your in between jobs. I'm biased, but i would also look into Australia, we speak the same language and have a similar culture, but we are also pretty unique in our own strange way.... its a funny place, just think of the platypus, if there is a god it was obviously stoned when it made this place.

Will you pay for my college? I have a complicated situation right now with that. Because I'm currently married to a poor rich kid who owns hundreds of thousands of property but doesn't see a penny, I will have a hard time getting a decent loan for school. I am still planning to go to the financial aid office though, and see if there is some way to make it happen regardless of how it "looks" on paper.

Of course, I'd like to go to college eventually, no matter what. But I can't force it to happen. What makes me kinda mad is that I've let 3 opportunities to attend college slip through my fingers and now I don't know if I'll ever get another one. Right now I'm just trying to make myself happy doing something fun.

I wish you luck finding a new place to live. But I strongly advise to NOT go to India. I have a buddy who visited India...he said it was the most over crowded dirty place he has ever been. So unless you like smelling ass all day and being bumped into...don't go to India.
If you know Spanish, some South American countries might be a good choice. Argentina is a good place. Not very violent, nice people, they use ethanol as fuel instead of oil. From what I heard from a friend, prescription medication is over the counter.

When the fair comes to your state volunteer to be a roustabout. It's not leaving the continent but it'll certainly be a change living with a bunch of Mexicans in a cramped trailer with low pay eating tortillas. And you can always hop on a bus and go home.
Who knows, maybe you'll like it and will find a place as a bearded lady.

If it's experience and adventure you crave, I wouldn't reccomend moving right away. Instead, travel to as many places as you can. Know of a place that looks cool? Go there. Ever wanted to see this-or-that monument? Go there. Do whatever you want. Once you've been to many places, you'll be able to compare them and come to a better decision on where to move, if you ultimately decide to.
Some things you might wanna take into account. How many people there speak English? Could you get by with being unilingual? Are you willing to learn an entirely new language for a place you may be unhappy with later on? How do they handle drug offenders? Which substances are illegal, and which ones are not? What kinds of areas do you like to be around? Beaches? Forests? Mountains? Do you prefer colder temperatures? Warmer? Like heavy snow? No snow at all? Consider everything.
Some of those may seen insignificant, but they matter a lot if you're going to be spending a large portion of your lifetime there. Choose carefully, and good luck.

Personally I'd go to Melbourne Australia. voted most liveable city in the world. It's cheap, and has everything for whatever kind of person you are. I know cos I live there myself :P

The American dollar won't go nearly as far as it used to abroad, especially in the more developed partner nations. That would make the adjustment/settlement period a little shorter depending how prepared you are.

moth i think i met you in person, but i'm confused. did your old user name be emlynshade? i ask because your post is resonating with me in a way emlynshades used to.
i just made a post in dreamer's journal somewhat relating to this. basically how i deal with the need for adventure when its not practical to just get up and go somewhere (which i have done several times)
i think bug is right though, when you get somewhere new, pretty quickly you find yourself back in the same spot.
personally i've gone the route of giving up on adventure for now, and just slowly building towards the grander adventures of my fantasies.
as silversoul said, i'm going to be doing festival vending next summer to let the adventure back into my life while hopefully building on my grander schemes. if your husband is the tall skinny guy with much passion for philosophy and metaphysics, then i'd say i'd love to attempt to nomad around with you guys the coming summer.
this post has been very interesting for me. i run a parallel life where i am on a grand adventure as for some reason i felt like explaining to dreamer. then i see this post about adventure. in my adventure i'm supposed to be a vendor at festivals. silversoul suggests to you that you be a vendor at festivals to experience adventure. in my paralellel life i like to see signs in things.

You may have trouble locating her when it is time to pack up and move on to the next festival. Maybe she would let you implant some kind of tracking device so she wont be too much of a hassle. Is this reasonable?

Hey guys! I just got back home, so I wanted to write a thank you towards everyone who replied. I get ahead of myself sometimes and my mind leaps to the most extreme way to try and solve something. But actually I got some good ideas from this thread, like I'm going to save up my money all winter and do some traveling to festivals this year. I'll probably make a thread about it because I've never been to a big festival and am unsure about the basics. But thanks again. Hopefully this way my thirst for action and adventure will be satisfied.

I would also recommend traveling around alot. If you can save up 5k, you could take quite a long vacation if you can spend your money wisely and go the right places.
You may also want to check this site out:
http://www.volunteerabroad.com/search.cfm
It is not only about volunteering though, there are paying jobs on there as well.

who can also do WWoofing which is basically working on an organic farm for room and board. I haven't done it but my older sister has and she had great experiences. Just search for wwoof and the country you want to go to on google i.e. Wwoof italy.
