Moving to another country
    #7581448 - 10/31/07 04:08 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

My mind is all over the place lately. I have been thinking about moving to another country...all on my own. Which place would be the cheapest and safest? Iceland maybe? Or India? Or a country in South America?

I need a big change in my life, location wise, and nothing in the US seems to fit. I am starting to think I should just go to another country altogether. I don't want to go to Canada. I want to leave the continent.

Has anyone ever done this? Any advice? What kind of job could I get in another country to support myself? Help...

I think I'm going to get a few books on various countries that I am interested in living in and then just research the shit out of it. I will try to save at least 5,000$ for the move. Do you think this is a reasonable estimate? Actually now that I think I want to do this, I feel so much better inside. A true adventure may be in store for me.

Depends on what you want to do with your life. Morocco, Nepal, Northern India, Cyprus and Peru have always held an appeal for me.

save your money fast - with the rate the US dollar's depreciating, by the time you get there you're USD5000 will be worth about 100 euro

I wish you the best of luck, but I would ask you to think deeply about what your motivation is.  I often have great fantasies about leaving everything behind and starting over in a new place.  And maybe my problem is that I haven't followed through!  But I think more likely this is my mind turning the present into something to be gotten away from by creating some exciting future in an unknown environment.
People are the same everywhere.  You still have your body anywhere you go.  And you still have your personal history and conditioning.  So it could be that you'll move somewhere else and feel very happy about it for awhile, only to find that a lot of the same patterns are being played out in your interaction with reality.  That isn't a bad thing, just something to consider.  My advice is to think deeply about whether a move is something you need, or whether it is just another way for you to maintain a sense of separateness and a false identity based on your life situation.
I haven't talked to you really but from your posts I consider you a very wise person, so I bet you'll be fine wherever you end up, and I'm really curious as to where that will be!

My body I will give to pleasures,
to diversions that I’ve dreamed of,
to the most daring erotic desires,
to the lustful impulses of my blood, without
any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

Start researching what countries fit your interests. And start learning that language!

Australia?

I think it'd be the easiest transition, but Britain has a pretty cool musical scene

I moved to the Netherlands from the states about two months ago. I wanted to change the direction of my life that I was leading home in the states. I think I have somewhat done that. I miss everything though. I keep wanting to go back.

My advice to you would be, after choosing a country that suits you start learning the language before even stepping foot there. Getting a job in a foreign country without being able to speak the language is a 100% failure believe me I know. You also have to ask yourself where you are going to stay. 5,000 dollars won't last you forever even in a poorer country mostly because of exchange rates. Think about what you do now job wise and ask yourself if its relevant to the country.

Learn the language first. Look for a job now. Look for a home third.

You might want to think of it as a vacation at first. I don't want to tell you are going to fail, because no matter what might happen it is a positive and utterly euphoric learning experience. However, if for what ever reason things don't happen, you'll want a place to come back to.

Keep us informed!

MOTH, I don't mean to criticize, but I constantly see you looking for change. It seems like you're addicted to it, and are never satisfied with the way things are. Ever think of looking for inner change? If you keep looking for happiness outside yourself, I doubt you'll ever find it.

My standard answer is Amsterdam despite the fact that I've never been there. Check out my "Stability vs. Amsterdam" thread from almost 3 years ago. I was seriously considering moving away from the US because I felt angry about the fact that my spiritual sacraments were against the law. I'm still angry about that, but I know now that I'm far away from being able to leave my friends and family.

I feel like I'm constantly looking for inner AND outer change. The two are one in the same. The outer is a reflection of the inner and vice versa. So yes, maybe I'm looking for change inside and out constantly.

Yes, a part of me wants to find a point of stability.

but, where, and how? I don't know the answers to these questions. I just want to experience, and experience and experience. I don't know how to stop myself from doing that, really. I am a creature of change. What's the problem with that?

Well, I don't get anywhere. So I'd like to settle down, but my soul craves constant adventure and travel. So what to do? Suggestions welcome based on what I just said, not what you know of my post history.

It's possible to travel without moving all the time. It's called vacation.

Just make sure you really really want to move before you do. I recently moved to the UK and I've been a lot less happy since i got here 5 months ago. I just doesn't feel right to me.

But...I want to be immersed in something different. What about a 3 month vacation? That's something I was considering...a long-ass vacation during the summer rather then moving my life completely.

Also, from going to different festivals, I found many artists and artisans(and dealers) live a rather nomadic lifestyle, traveling from place to place selling their wares. If you could learn some craft like glassblowing, making jewelry, or something along those lines, you might be able to do something like that.
