Trial & Error
    #7580865 - 10/31/07 01:54 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

i recently acquired a copy of the mushroom cultivator and realized after reading briefly into it that i had only been guessing on cultivation techniques i read about here (not that those were inaccurate). after two attempts, i am still awaiting primordia formation on my three cased wbs substrates. on my first attempt, as predicted, i failed miserably and could not even fully colonize my jars. this time around, i correctly pasteurized the bird seed, acquired a pressure cooker, pc'd, covered with coffee filters, incubated in a sterile box covered with at 80-82 degrees for 2 weeks, and had 2 of 6 pint jars fail; one trich contam, and one stall that led to tirch contam. i cased the remaining 4 pint jars and so far one got contaminated and the other three are colonizing the casing mix slowly, with one that has what i believe is cobweb mold. as an optimist, i believe i can save two, if not three of my casings. as a pragmatist, i feel they will all fail, either contaminate or just not pin. my casing mix is miracle gro moisture control potting mix, vermiculite, and calcium carbonate in oyster shell and powder form.

i feel so foolish for thinking i could wing the cultivation process. basically the reason for this post is i would like some feedback on tried and true methods, and mixes (e.g. substates, casing mix, compost, et cetera). i am willing to give the hpoo method a go, but am still iffy on how to process it and so forth. i have read some of the teks, but would appreciate personal opinions on this. please and thanks.

:pm: me if you have questions about lasers

Although i may advise others in a general way regarding all types of mushroom grows, and may even post question from other forums about growing "active" mushrooms, i only grow non-"active" mushrooms and edibles.

The teks give LOTS of personal opinions. Unless your asking about someplace where the teks contradict themselves...

your question is very vague. you will not get a good answer until you ask a good question.

Im not being mean here, but its obvious you have not read teh teks.

Two things off the bat I see. WBS must be sterilized, not pasteurized, and coffee filters have no place in mycology. They certainly won't keep contaminants out of your grain jars.

No its all good... I am just learning how much information is in them, and i have asked some vague questions myself

The biggest thing for me is that reading the teks, and reading multiple teks, gives you more of an understanding since each author includes different tidbits of info.

I would bet that a reasonably intelligent person could read 3-4 different teks in each category in about an hour and come up with a process that works quite well and have success the first time.

I hope thats the case because I started my first grow yesterday, its based on 4 different teks and I'm confident that it should be a success.
