Have you ever checked out Hyphae's Pinning Strategy? That should help you get more out of your casings. That one you have is capable of much more.

The casing layer is about 2 inches with the crumbled cake being about 1/2 inch its 50/50. I was told to start fruiting as soon as mycelium started appearing on top of the casing so that's what I did, I guess I should've covered the mycelium with casing until it all came up to the top

theres you problem right there! youve got your casing and your bubstrate depth backwards!
its crazy you got pins too come up thru 2 inches of casing with only 1/2" of cake!

Yes have read it many times, it starts of with cakes then goes into casing. So only part of that guide is relevent to my grow.
It suggests a 24 hour fridge dunk, which is not benificial to cubunsis (tropical/subtropical species). All fridge dunking does is slow things down.

Btw, did you just case cakes straight, without adding substrate?
That isn't worth doing. Dunked and rolled cakes will produce as much as cased cakes.
Quoting myself from another post (can't be bothered to retype, lol)
Quote:
Quite a few people have compared the differences in fruiting between dunking and rolling the cakes in moist verm versus crumbling the cakes and casing them, and have found that there is very little if any extra yeild. By crumbling the cakes you:
a) risk more contams b) take longer to get fruits because the mycelium has to repair the damage made by crumbling (if you dunk and roll your cakes, they can start fruiting immediately) c) your mycelium wastes nutrients it could use to fruit because it has to use them to repair that damage.
On the other hand, crumbling to poo, enriched coir or another bulk substrate adds loads of new nutrients, and once the mycelium has colonized all that substrate is can make lots more fruits.

Nutrients in Miracle grow are for plants, so won't really do anything for shrooms.
next time, unless you are spawning your cakes to bulk (poo, enriched coir, whatever) don't bother casing, just dunk and roll.
If your genetics are good you can get really good flushes from rolled cakes.

Cased cakes just produce 1 or 2 bigger flushes compared to lots of smaller flushes from a dunk n roll cake, yeilds are roughly the same.
The only advantage i see to casing a cake with a good casing layer is the microclimate it creates for the mycelium. Which rolling your cakes in verm does a not to bad job.
But its all great fun trying different methods for yourself.
