One Child
    #7578809 - 10/30/07 10:45 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

Terence McKenna once asked the mushroom how we can save the world. The mushroom replied, "Each person should parent just one child."

I've seen the human overpopulation issue been debated over and over and it appears to me that people's opinions on this are notably various and divided.

It's also not uncommon to see the one child proposition being criticized, as it is often compared to China's controversial social policies.

However I find the idea by itself very powerful and am convinced that it is by far the most reasonable course for population reduction that I am aware of.

I want this discussion to pertain to the men and women of the high-tech industrial democracies and would like to keep the third world out of this, at least for right now.

Terence's solution was to not enforce the idea through the act of penalizing parents with two or more children, but to simply make it appealing to the public.

For example, "If you will parent one child, you will have increased leisure time, you will have greater earning power, more expendable income...", and perhaps even get tax cuts and college discounts if you choose to raise a single child.

Share your thoughts on this!

I think it's a good cause, but consider this: Say you parent your only child for 30 years, and then once it's too late to have another kid your child gets killed in an accident. Well not only is your only child gone, but so is your gene pool. I think 2 kids is more reasonable.

If the child dies, and one insists on preserving their evolutionary legacy, then this could easily be solved by simply having a new child.

There would still just be one in the end.

Of course there is nothing wrong with having two children. The focus however would be to make the idea of having one child culturally appealing to the people.

2.5 children makes sense on the surface. 2 children from 2 parents is not a sustaining amount taking early deaths into account. one is reducing for sure but where is the stop?

I'd say it doesn't have as much to do with how many children one can have so much as how many one can influence.

The stop is when the major political debate that everybody's interested in is "Are there enough people in the world?"

The whole idea in itself is experimental.

This thread isn't about "FREEDOM" or "WHAT I WANT". It's about what's best for the world.

Do you want what is best for the world or what is best for yourself?

Both answers are correct of course but with different applications and implications.

tragedy of the commons
one day the human population will hit its maximum
Earth has its own maximum carrying capacity
and once we go over that mark
waves of people will start dying all over the world

why risk that?
why not sparingly reproduce?
this also ties in with poverty

impoverish families tend to have more children
people supporting this say that more children means more working units of the family
but with more children comes more mouths to feed...

the human population grows exponentially
we need to prevent overpopulation before it's too late
and we deplete almost every single resource we use that Mother Nature provides us

You can have ten children that raise themselves to follow the lemming over the cliff or one child that you teach to play the music that leads them.

We tend to like to fuck though. Fucking leads to children. Damn! We are having too many children. We are fucking around too much. What do we do with all of these children. Ship them off to war. The strong will survive and come back. Pretty clinical.

If my government offered financial benefits, or if my community promoted single child families, then I would definitely fuck for one child.

No, I'd still just fuck for one child, just so I would not need to work as much, which means I'll have more leisure time for myself, which means I will have more energy to raise my kid, and last but not least for the simple satisfaction of making the collective difference that we can only help manifest individually.

I don't know maybe you missed what I was saying. If you only have one child and it lives to say 30, and by then maybe the parents can't have anymore kids? Well if their child dies they get fucked pretty hard in that perspective.

One child limit for everyone sounds ridiculous IMO

Common sense dictates that the earth can only sustain a maximum amount of human beings feasibly, and that, at some point, more and more scrutiny will have to be placed on how we, as a species, reproduce.

Ok so if parents have two children together, and then the parents die, two people have essentially been replaced by two.. If you want to take your chance with one kid go right ahead. I know when I have kids I more than likely won't be limiting myself to one because of some mushroom trip terrance mckenna had. I'm sure billions of other people feel the same way.

Once places become packed with massive amounts of people nature will take its course and take care of things. Perhaps through a disease, or other natural disasters.

Why address the fact that I say one child limit is ridiculous and ignore why I even said that in the first place? C'mon..

Since I think I have to say it just one more time:
If two people have just one child, and then that one child dies once it's too late for the parents to have any more offspring, they are essentially fucked in the perspective of passing on their genes. Which is... the point of having offspring?

So if you want to have one kid more power to you. I don't think it will be catching on ANY time soon. Unless your a commie lol

i think that everyone having one child would be a good plan if this was 1007 and not 2007.

it is farrrr too late to actually consider the idea anymore, especially with places like the united states.

china can get away with it because of thier history, government, and society.  the united states cant get away with it for the exact same reasons.

the more i ponder the problems of the world today, the more i feel that i shouldnt worry about these massive things like overpopulation, and instead i should just take care of myself and enjoy the time i will have with those around me.  if instead everyone were to strive to be the best person they can for themselves and everyone around them, the world would have a better chance.
