Mycelium grow on top of rye grains

i noticed that all my jars of rye has growth at the top of the jars and the myce works its way down. is that normal? i inoc my jars with some LC then shook them up. i didn't see any growth starting anywhere else but the top then it worked its way down the jar. shouldn'tt it start everywhere at once? i have to rotate and flip the jars to get them growing all over. what i want to know is if this is normal. i don't get why it only grows whatever is facing up and not whatever has touched mycelium. is it because of gravity? can myce really tell which way is up?

if by shaking you mean just agitating the jars in a straight up and down motion it isn't likely you would get a very even distribution of myc throughout the jar.i like to... hold the jar almost horizontally and straif the top layer of grain with ~1ml/1cc of lc in order to inoculate as much of the "exposed" grain as possible, then turn the jar slowly so as to expose another layer of fresh grain,as you do so you will see the fresh grains tumbling over the inoculated grain, thereby in turn coming into contact with the lc.3ml per 400g of grain should be ample. if you turn the jar while tilting it back and forth you will get a good even distribution. it's easier to do than explain.;)

if you inoculate a grain jar vertically, and your shaking consists of a simple up and down movement you can't expect much more than the initial colonization to be confined to the top portion of the jar. you would be better off rotating the jar directly after inoculating the grain(when using lc) and then let it sit until it is at least 25% colonized before shaking.

What in that post possibly led you to diagnose the genus and species of mold that this guy *might* have? To boot one that doesn't even find favorable conditions in a grain jar.
It will grow in whatever direction it finds helpful, regardless of orientation, whether mushroom or mold mycelium. That's quite common if you sprayed your spore solution and didn't shake; it's also common if you left the inoculation site exposed. When I fuck up I often get the spore solution growing mycelium from the bottom, and contaminant spores germinate on top.
