A drumming friend always told me to tune in a star pattern, so one side won't get overly tight right away.
And tell me if this is worth reading: http://home.earthlink.net/~prof.sound/

yeah i knew the star pattern thing already, i wish i knew that when i first bought the drum set. i attempted to tune them in a circle pattern and they got streched and warped right away (i was a dumbass back then).
thanks for showing me the drum tuning bible that taught me things i had no idea even mattered. peace

i would learn to really tune by ear, but here is a website that sells a tool that tunes your drums for you. and like someone said before tune the lugnuts in a star pattern, not circular.
edit: i forgot the link to that website. here it is..

I have used a drumdial for about 4 months and have been playing for 12 years. It's a great tool and you really learn a lot about the drum.
I had never heard of that drum bible posted above, but after a quick scan through I must say it's awesome!
Just be prepared to spend a lot of time tuning each drum. It's worth it!
What kind of set do you have?

you usually want there to be a root third pfifth in a 5 piece set.
the thing is, there is no perfect tuning for drums, it is basically whatever sounds like its inherent pitch/tone as well as how tight you need them for rebound. When starting out on drums, the best thing to do is take the toms off, but if you insist, then make them as tight as possible so you can start to feel the rebound and work with it. basically, an 8 inch sounds a certain way, just like a 14" and 16" floor tom should sound a certain way. remember that on your albums, the drums have been compressed, mastered, and had all sorts of reverb/delay algorithms put on them.... almost the same deal with say... Danny Carey's toms.. you will never be able to make them sound like that.

Tuning drums is somewhat an art. But there is truth in yawnings post. I have been recording for a bit and acousticly my drums dont sound that great but once recorded they sound completly different.
But if you can get your drums to sound good acousticly, it makes such a difference life and in recording.
I learned to tune from a dave weckl DVD.
The basic concept was to get the heads on the drum, then stretch them with pressure, start to tighten the lugs in the start pattern stretchin every tme u tighteh.
This is to seat the heads.
then u can tighten in the same star pattern fashion, turning each lug a quarter turn each time till the head gets past the wrinkle point, u will see the wrinkles in the head disapear, once u have reached this tighten it some more, then start listening to the pitch at each lug by tapping, and start tuning down till u reach close to the wrinkle point.
The goal is to get each lug to sound the same, it takes a bit of practice, but this is a good staritng point. Its all personal preference but this method gives you somewhere to start from.
Also getting the head to the point just after the wrinkle point where all the lugs are tunned evenly is the point where the heads should be at the natural tunning of the shell revelant to the depth and size.
Bear in mind that it all depends on the type of kit, poorly made cheap kits can be almost imposible to tune.
