dude, they always try to jack you even if you DON'T break the lease.
Once this apt complex tried to say I owed them $900 after I moved out. I was like "What for?" And they gave me this bullshit line item bill. Among other things it said: "Trash removal: $300". Now, I might have left a couple coat hangers laying in the closet, but I fail to see how it cost $300 to remove trash from my place. It was pretty clean, all my shit was gone.
So anyway, I just told them to fuck off. Never paid it. I expected to see it on my credit report, but it never got reported. I guess they knew at heart it was a scam and didn't press the issue.
on your situation though:
I say, ignore it until it ends up on your credit report, then dispute it with the agency around christmas time. My friend told me to always do disputes of debt at this time because the high volume of the holiday season makes it more likely for them to just drop it. But I've never tried this, though.

Once you exercise this freedom you've lost all control over what you do, what is produced, and how it is produced. And in the end, the product doesn't belong to you. The only way you can avoid bosses and jobs is if you don't care about making a living. Which leads to the second freedom: the freedom to starve." - Tom Morello

They have the ability to damage your credit score by sending in notices to the credit bureaus. If they send a "bad report" to one (or more) of the big credit bureaus, your credit score will go down. HOWEVER.... you can then write a letter to the credit bureua, saying that the report is wrong. Then it is up the property management company to PROVE to the credit bureau that they have a case. There are sample letters and more info on this online.
Until they turn it over to a collection agency, you're fine. They can make all the threats they want. If it *does* get turned over to a collection agency, you probably have another chance to make them prove that BY LAW you owe them money. Lots of times apartment complexes can't really do that, and they'll try to bully you into paying for bailing on them.
same thing happened to my wife when she bailed on her apartment after college. They sent us lots of unofficial "invoices" but none were sent certified mail, so they can't prove that we ever got a single notice. Our credit got fucked for a bit, but after sending a letter to Equifax, we got the "bad report" removed from our credit score thing.
