Warm weather wood lovers? Do they exist?
    #7572962 - 10/29/07 01:13 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

I am looking to do an outdoor grow but I am in a 9-10 hardiness zone. Are there any woodlovers that will work in this area? I remember hearing something about a woodlover found in South America that likes warmer weathers but that was a while ago. Anyone have some info for me?

You notice the west coast is in the same zones. With some cold nights and rain, you could probably do something fine. I saw them fruit in zone 5 before artificially planted not naturally.

I should say I am in more of a 10 zone and it does not get that cold here even during winter.

Most species of Ganoderma will fruit in very warm weather. H. ulmarium (elm oyster) is also another warm weather wood decomposer.

What about pink oysters? They love the 90's.

Why not make an outdoor bed of cubes, or pan cyans? They should do well with proper RH.

True woodloving Psilocybes probably do exist but I haven't found any. Several that seemed to be woodlovers such as Psilocybe weilii are in fact secondary decomposers and actually prefer compost with some partially decayed wood. It is still a good candidate for a perrenial bed supplimented with wood chips. Other species in the Section Cordisporae are similar in their requirements.

Gymnopilus luteofolius is an active woodlover and does well in Florida and similar climates. Potency is fairly low and the taste is intensely bitter.

Yes, many are from Mexico. Psilocybe caerulescens, hoogshagenii, weilii (Georgia), villarrealiae, laurae etc.

Mind me asking what the term Cordisporae actually describes?

Cord/i I believe? is latin for heart, sporea being the plural of spores. Which I'm guessing is referring to the characteristic of caps remaining domed even at full maturity.

If you mean what conceptually it's referring to, a section fits between genus and species, a grouping of like species. Workman could probably fill you in on the above, what in particular unifies it.

I could be completely wrong on either count though

I hear ya on the latin. Maybe heart shaped spores? Is there a dimple on the end of the spore where it attaches to the basidia?

:rofl2:

I must be stoned. That was my first thought, then I got sidetracked. Yes, they do, and that must be the thinking. Check out Workman's photos:

Seeing that next to your avatar causes some serious cognitive dissonance.
