The Most important issue facing America today-
#7572886 - 10/29/07 12:51 PM (16 years, 3 months ago) |
|
|
So - My teacher asked this question today for a random essay homework assignment, and I had a few ideas but wanted some more outside input.
"Identify the most important economic, political, or social issue facing your country. please explain it's significance and offer at least one solution"
I've already thought of the basics: global warming, globalization, illegal immigration, business ethics. Figured I would post it up on here and see if any of you outside-the-box shroomery thinkers had any other ideas i might be able to run with.
Thanks in advance!

Actually you could argue that there is too big of a population. It isn't just America's problem, but the world's proble. Look into Thomas Malthus and his ideas. You can write an essau on that easily.

drug war; resulting in political tyranny, profit, violence and organized crime.
Also I'd say you guys have your dwindling freedom to worry about as well (which the drug war also plays apart in).
In fact; anything your government declares war on tends to be ridiculous. Damn war of terrror.
Global warming is a global problem.

Overpopulation resulting in resource depletion which will throw the world into an economic depression within the next few years along with the attendant social chaos.
If you trace most of the effects you mentioned back to their cause you will find a common thread in overpopulation. Too many people making too many problems.

it's funny you should mention Thomas Malthus - i just finished studying the Malthusian model in my Development Economics class (class on why 3rd world countries are still 3rd world countries).
His model is pretty smart, population grows at a fast rate while food & good production grows slowly. This leads to subsistence economies - which are never good. The only problem with his model is it does not accoutn for technological change, which unfortunately is one of the key factors in development.
if it were a problem facing America (unfortunately what i have to do my essay on) then i would definitely spew out tons of information (seeing as i just learned all about it) - but its not so i cant .
HOWEVER - the Harris-Todaro model of rural-urban migration is a very good explanation of the current mexican-american migration and what's fueling it etc.
its nice to see people on the shroomery throwin out economic terminology - its called the dismal science for a reason, nobody likes it, heh.

that's a very good topic (those two combined) however, i feel as though it would be more appropriate for a dissertation, not a 500word essay.
I need a topic i can identify, explain significance, throw up a quick solution, and get out all concisely. I'm goign to attempt to use that topic tomorrow morning - but keep more coming incase i can't get it confined to ~500 words.

Well then I always encourage discussion of failed "drug war" policies...something you can easily wrap up into a neat 500 word package.

i could easily spit out 500 words on the drug policy, but it's so cliche among stoners - that I don't want to put myself out as fitting to that stereotype.
i suppose i should've mentioned this earlier - but i'll be using this essay (or a deviation from it) as a submission to a summer academic internship i'm applying for in DC. It's 3 classes at georgetown + an 30hr/week internship at one of the program's many sponsors.
so - the drug thing isn't so much an option as i'd like it to be.

If you want to avoid being a cliche, name the paper something along the lines of the drug war. Then start out writing about the drug war but make your paper more relevant towards medical care or what have you, the teacher wont see it coming

BY FAR the most important and dangerous issue facing the American people today is three words long: THE PATRIOT ACT
ANY citizen can be jailed indefinitely, tortured, and be denied their right to due process under the guise of suspected terrorist activities.
I don't see how ANY other issue in America is any more significant. This right here is the core foundation of our country being eaten away.

Entrepreneurs and small businesses are the backbone of the American economy. They comprise 99% of all employers and create 75% of our nation's new jobs. Both sides of the aisle consistently claim to represent their interests -- yet what policies should Washington pursue to help this vital sector?
Write about the most pressing economic issues facing America's small enterprises today, from health care costs and tax burdens to workforce and regulatory concerns.
Instant brownie points.

The Most important issue facing America today: oversimplifying complex problems like assuming that there is one predominant problem over the rest and not a complex web of failed governing, policies and social issues.
Or Materialism. Seriously, Materialism and Money is the root of all evil.

To me it's the way people and nations relate to their problems; as if overpowering a problem is the same as solving it.
It's the erroneous belief that certain troublesome parts of humanity can be eliminated... that all criminals will one day be jailed, that a drug-free America is actually possible, that the war on terror can actually be won, that people won't drink and drive if the penalties are stiff enough. This breed of human nature is doomed.
Forever hacking at the leaves...
-------------------- Welcome evermore to gods and men is the self-helping man. For him all doors are flung wide: him all tongues greet, all honors crown, all eyes follow with desire. Our love goes out to him and embraces him, because he did not need it. ~ R.W. Emerson, "Self-Reliance"
