The Most important issue facing America today-

So - My teacher asked this question today for a random essay homework assignment, and I had a few ideas but wanted some more outside input.
"Identify the most important economic, political, or social issue facing your country. please explain it's significance and offer at least one solution"
I've already thought of the basics: global warming, globalization, illegal immigration, business ethics. Figured I would post it up on here and see if any of you outside-the-box shroomery thinkers had any other ideas i might be able to run with.
Thanks in advance!

Dare I say the drug war. But med care and fundamentalist religion seem like better ideas.

Actually you could argue that there is too big of a population. It isn't just America's problem, but the world's proble. Look into Thomas Malthus and his ideas. You can write an essau on that easily.

drug war; resulting in political tyranny, profit, violence and organized crime.
Also I'd say you guys have your dwindling freedom to worry about as well (which the drug war also plays apart in).
In fact; anything your government declares war on tends to be ridiculous. Damn war of terrror.
Global warming is a global problem.

Overpopulation resulting in resource depletion which will throw the world into an economic depression within the next few years along with the attendant social chaos.
If you trace most of the effects you mentioned back to their cause you will find a common thread in overpopulation. Too many people making too many problems.

it's funny you should mention Thomas Malthus - i just finished studying the Malthusian model in my Development Economics class (class on why 3rd world countries are still 3rd world countries).
His model is pretty smart, population grows at a fast rate while food & good production grows slowly. This leads to subsistence economies - which are never good. The only problem with his model is it does not accoutn for technological change, which unfortunately is one of the key factors in development.
if it were a problem facing America (unfortunately what i have to do my essay on) then i would definitely spew out tons of information (seeing as i just learned all about it) - but its not so i cant .
HOWEVER - the Harris-Todaro model of rural-urban migration is a very good explanation of the current mexican-american migration and what's fueling it etc.
its nice to see people on the shroomery throwin out economic terminology - its called the dismal science for a reason, nobody likes it, heh.

i second these two, combined. the amount of money spent on our military is ludicrous and i feel it would be much better spent on working towards socializing our healthcare.

that's a very good topic (those two combined) however, i feel as though it would be more appropriate for a dissertation, not a 500word essay.
I need a topic i can identify, explain significance, throw up a quick solution, and get out all concisely. I'm goign to attempt to use that topic tomorrow morning - but keep more coming incase i can't get it confined to ~500 words.

Well then I always encourage discussion of failed "drug war" policies...something you can easily wrap up into a neat 500 word package.
