Why The Bible is so revered

Let's go back in time. Way back.
The Bible literally means The Book. It was the first mass produced literary work on the printing press. This was magic. This was a premier event. Better than the first Star Wars movie, better than X-Box or whatever fad strikes you.
This was new technology. Only scholars and some nobility and clerics and a few others could read at the time. Bibles were also quite expensive with heavy, handstitched leather covers and the initial set-up costs were enormous.
So you have something quite novel and inaccessable to the common man allegedly containing all of the wisdom and history of an entire culture and possibly the Word of God.
How could one not be awed by this?
Of course, none of these feelings were indicators of truth, but man is primarily an emotional being.

Because few people bother to actually read it.

For quite a while, few people were even able to read it. The church had no desire to translate the Bible into languages common people could understand, and this was in a time that a majority of people couldn't even read in their native language. William Tyndale produced the first widely (and I use that term loosely) circulated English translation, and was promptly burned to death. His work was then used as reference material when the King James version was crafted.
Without a native language to read from, exploring the Bible was the province of learned men, members of the establishment who mostly saw eye to eye. Much better to dictate the Bible from a pulpit, rather than allow the people to read it for themselves. It was a mysterious book, and that made it magic. It was also magic because priests said it was magic.

Exactly.
If such a book had been released today, it would still garner much attention, but would only be revered by a few. It is more about the historical context than the content.

They are only slightly more subtle nowadays.
