ok, don't laugh

My tummy has always been the spot I fixate on, trying to make it flatter and toner.
After having a child not too long ago, but long enough that my body is healed, I recently started trying to do sit-ups and/or crunches to get my belly back to normal. I can't do them. It's like there's no muscle strength at all.
Anyone have suggestions on another way to strengthen these muscles so I can start doing crunches again?
I have been doing some light yoga but free time is hard to find around here. I am looking for a specific exercise I can drop down and do when I have a quik 5 mins.
THanks

Look into those electronic devices that make your muscles contract without you going thru the excercise.

hmmm. have you tried laying flat on your back, with your knees bent in the "usual" crunch position", and pulling your knees to your chest? this works the lower abdominals more, and may be a little easier.

i hope this helps

First you need to be aware that you can't spot reduce fat in one specific targeted area. It comes off all your body in general and crunches or situps won't burn fat in that one area. That is a big myth about exercise.
The good news is that anything you can do to burn more calories will help burn fat all over your body and that area as well over time.

Try holding yourself up in the pushup position, with your back as flat as possible. Instead of doing pushups, just take a deep breath through your nose, count slowly through three, and exhale as slowly as is comfortable through your mouth. Do this a few times whenever you get a chance, as it builds core strength as well as strengthening your lungs and vital organs.
Best of luck.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.
And Zorbman I don't really have much excess weight anywhere else. That's why I tend to focus on it.
Bug I'll try that thanks.

You understand what he means though? Working your abdominals has ZERO effect on reducing bodyfat in that area. It only works the muscles underneath. You can't choose what areas you want to burn fat from. If you are looking for more definition in your ab area (a more 'toned' look) you can reduce overall bodyfat with cardiovascular exercise like running or aerobics.

Naw, but similar. The plank you're balanced on your forearms, you don't have full extension of your arms as you do when you're in pushup position. And in the plank you don't breathe deeply and exhale slowly, the idea is to keep your breathing steady. The position I'm talking about is called by martial artists the static hold position. They are both really effective though.

I think they stopped producing them because people stuck them on their scrotums and gooches after Jackass came out.
