What city/town in SoCal???

Definitely Psilocybe, maybe Ps. azurescens, though they resemble the Ps. cyanescens I've found, as well:

Faceofbear, do any of the specimens have wavy cap margins like this?

no wavy cap margins...they seem to mature into a flat cap with a knob.
they initially caught my eye because of the resemblance to cyans, especially those "bleached" ones.

By SoCal I mean Los Angeles county...South Bay nonetheless (Manhattan/Hermosa/Redondo Beach)!

Maybe if I take some more habitat pictures you can see what I mean about this being a peculiar little area. The habitat is pretty artificial around here, lots of sprinklers and gardeners spreading mulch and woodchips. I'm not ruling out that someone may have cultivated this patch, perhaps even years ago - but i definitely think i'm the only one interested in it now.

those are not azures

either cyanescens or cyanofibrillosa

not because they dont grow there, and im not saying they couldnt be cultivated in socal with good intent, but those mushrooms in your photos are definitely not azurescens.

wait till someone who actually hunts them to chime in, most of you in this thread have little to no experience with azures up close, no?
they look nothing like the bell and nipple that i know from experience, and they closely resemble a lot of the pygmy cyans i was finding in the bay area for the past 5 years, and some of them are infact cyanofibrillosas, so your guess could be right that theres most likely more than one kind of mushroom in there.

this is a great post faceofbear, thanks for bringing this to everyones attention.

still, i only see one that resembles an azure and the rest dont at all, and its only cause that one mushroom is so young in its maturation.

the mature one next to it looks like a cyanescens, and the belled ones are textbook cyanofibrillosa. cyanofibs usually dont get wavy caps either.

i find it extrememly hard to believe that woodlovers have cometo LA county. ive never seen this occur before. and the bruising doesnt look blue to me on my screen just brown but if its blue ill pray.

i would go absolutely crazy if i found cyans in my area. i think ill start looking anyways.

damn. you should make sure on this find. its a really important one for so cal.

thanks to everybody for the input so far.

the bruising is definitely bluish...it's certainly subtle, and appears green on the gills (blue + yellow = go figure), but i can't say that i'm making it up. i think it's easier to see in real life also.

so my question is,

how to do i best go about "making sure"?

i'm planning on continuing to visit, and picking on maturation...i'll take some more pics + spore prints when i can.

is there anything else i should be doing?

they look like azurs to me, not cyans unless they're a very odd var i've never seen before. Nice pics though, very sexy shrooms

Hmmm, cyanescens, cyanofibrillosa or azures?

This is a very interesting post. Like most others here, I've never seen that kind of mushroom found in Southern California.

I hope one of the mods here can come up with a positive ID. Sure would be cool to see you LA peeps join the woodlover mania that grips the northern half of the west coast.

If you wanna really know what it is, send it to workman so he can do a microscopy on it. he will tell you what they are. if you are willing to part with a sample or spore print.

that sure would be nice if those are from so cal.
I believe that they would grow there. They grow in the central valley and its hotter here but not as dry as so cal. But a landscaped and irrigated area would produce for sure.

went back to the patch today to check on the progress

i managed to take a few pics before my camera died...:(

the three sisters from the other day:

maybe the shrooms came on a woodchip meteorite?

unfortunately what i couldn't take a picture of is a larger number of mushies, mostly pins still, but sprouting very near by. They resemble the pins of the others but are noticeably larger, and the more mature ones seem to have so far retained their cap colour and possibly have whiter stalks. anyway, I'll get pictures when i charge my girlfriend's camera.

i'm going to try and send workman some samples as soon as i can.

I had no idea that wood loving psilocybes grew in the central valley.
Is this an extremely rare occurrence?
I am in Stanislaus county and have found Subbs and Gyms but would love to think that there may be fibs or cyans around as well.
However I find it hard to believe that the chances are very good for them here.

I was thinking the same thing. However... I didn't think SoCal temps supported cold woodloving mushrooms. Have you guys been having a rainy cold spell?

yeah i wondered the same thing. it's a very random area though...pictures (when i can get em) will explain better than words.

no particularly "rainy spell" (we've had fires instead!)
but there have been a few rainy nights of late.
i think this is the second fruiting i've witnessed at this patch.
the thing is that area is definitely watered by hose or sprinkler, because it's near the trees that the gardeners water. so i mean, it's irrigated artificially and shaded from the californian sun.

Did you place that hunk of colonized chips with the pins there, or was it just sitting there like that??

sitting there.

i believe it's the result of a clumsy/curious gardener...
this patch is growing inside a gated "village"~basically full of wealthy insurers/basketball stars and their families.
they hire hordes of red-shirted gardeners that rip up all the flowers every couple weeks and replace them with new ones...

i can't see why anyone else would rip up a lump like that and then just leave it (and all the other shrooms) there.

Have you been getting a string of cold nights below 45F?

That woodlovers could be fruiting at the same time that half the state is burning in hot, dry winds just seems kinda impossible to me.
