Lucky to be born?
    #7570447 - 10/28/07 05:39 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

In a poetic sense, yes, but in a larger sense, no.

I doubt there is a giant globe full of souls in the ether with numbers on them.

Soul Assigner: Now drawing B52A3322190G5TYE34111223lllll1kmddms9932j3.

Soul #B52A3322190G5TYE34111223lllll1kmddms9932j3: Dammit! I wanted to be a human not a garden slug.

Soul Assigner: Sorry, maybe next time.

There is no 'luck of the draw'. In the same way, some people will say, "You are lucky to be an American (or subsitute the country of your choice)."

This does not make sense to this poster. "You" and "I" are emergent properties, not something mysteriously injected into matter. "We" form AFTER we are born and it could be no other way.

Is a chair 'lucky' to be a chair? No.

I think if you look at the ratio of human:non-human mass throughout the universe, you would have to say the we are pretty damn lucky to be human (if you consider the definition of luck).

"we" are matter. we are lucky in the sense that are matter formed into a human-being.

"we" could have been a goal-post or a blade of grass.

OlivePlume can only be OlivePlume. "You" could not be a blade of grass. It is not a lottery.

Orgone, maybe you should further think about what "you" actually is

Existence/life is just one big hand and an individual constitutes one of the fingers attached to the hand. Many of us make the mistake of thinking we are seperate from the hand. That we are one finger all by its lonesome.

You are right, it is not a lottery. Life is cause and effect.

If it is not luck, is it skill....?

The odds of me becoming "me" were stacked astronomically against me, yet here I am....

Sure it can. You are saying there is no nature only nurture? Bull... That which is "I" or "me" is a combination of the genetics I inherited and the exposure to the environment. There could be no other way.

You said that "We" form after we are born, that there is no inherent "me" or "I" before the act of birth. I say that is not the case, a significant portion of what makes you "you" was hardwired in at the moment of conception.

Bringing this to the topic, I am lucky my hard wired self was constructed in a land and time where food and opportunity are plenty.

Never born before for a billion years, born, living, dying, and never again to be born for eternity...hah..that's a sobering thought.

I agree there with DieCommie.
