PNW ID A. Muscaria
    #7570235 - 10/28/07 04:43 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

Found a large patch of these, never seen them before around here. I have no experience identifying these so hopefully someone can help. Substrate is muddy, grassy brush directly underneath evergreen trees. Please let me know what to photograph or inspect if more information is needed.

All specimens located near these exhibit similar coloring and general appearance, the older ones seeming to be paling and turning orange/yellow.

Thank you for any help.

There is only one common look alike for A. Muscaria in your area, the pantherina, and most of the ibotenic will be removed if you treat it as a muscaria and cook it.

if you want to be 100% make sure there is not a sticking up "collar" above the volva.

Thank you for the reply. I notice some minor.. layering, I guess, at the interface of volva and stipe which might be visible in the first picture, but it does not seem to be an overt collar or funnel. Pantherina is noticably lighter in complexion generally, correct?

pantherina is brown.

the layering u speak of at the top of the volva/base of the stipe is the key feature to identify a. muscaria, generally referred to as "concentric rings of scales"
i must say that those specimens do certainly have a much more prominent bulbous volva than any i have picked before
