Casing is a protective covering for the mycelium, it helps in aid against airborne contamination as well as serving as a humidity dome aiding against mycelium dry out.
Look at the teks on the main site or search shroomery's forums and read up on other's research, they usually contain more up to date info.

RR said in monotubs the diff. between casing and not casing is negligible (I think) so I'm just not sure...but yeah it seems like a good idea...the idea of not casing is so great compared to casing...casing is a pain in the ass...but i dont wanna cut too big of a corner either..

Hardly. A casing is by definition non-nutritive for mushrooms, and often is still nutritive for molds; it's frequently an inducer of disease. It does provide moisture and humidity, and does make a major difference in production.
