Request from NY
    #7569888 - 10/28/07 02:51 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

Hello all,

I found the caps pictured below recently, and am interested in what they are. It is very difficult for me alone to ID because I am colorblind. My curiosity doesn't abate merely because of that, so I have come to bother you!

Habitat: Upstate NY, lawn near, but not under, a couple small (less than 10') christmas-tree looking trees. So the trees may not have anything to do with it.

Gills: adnexed or free (hard to tell - close to both) dark-colored, soft, numerous.

Stem: 3.5" (9cm), .25" (.7cm) diameter, hollow, breaks when bent, somewhat fibrous.

Cap: color is brown (near as I can tell - see pictures), umbonate, 2.5" (6.5cm) diameter, texture is unremarkable, slightly cool to the touch, smooth.

Spore print: see pics, they'll do it better justice than I could.

Bruising: not sure that it does - may darken.

Scent: like a mushroom

The images toward the end are most indicative of the actual colors. I have more, and will add them if requested. If any more information is needed, let me know. Thanks in advance, this is really a great resource!

Pete

You have Lacrymaria lacrymabunda, very common this time of year.

Very nice job on the ID request.  Are you really colour blind??  How do you see things differently?  Like, how do colours appear to you?

Welcome to the Shroomery.

Pretty sure. Previously known as Psathyrella velutina. Here are some I found this month:

Looks similar, but not quite the same...I know there can be quite some variation in morphology even within species, though.

Ah, about the colorblindness...first, many people are colorblind (circa 8% of the white male population), and some more than others, with different colors. To answer your question, how could I ever tell you? I haven't ever seen anything else. Our color perceptions are completely internal. Some stuff that can be measured is that, for example, I am a protanope, meaning I am much less sensitive to red, leading to things like having a difficult time telling blue from purple. There are virtually no people who see in black and white. Wikipedia has a pretty good article: en.wikipedia.org/colorblindness

Simple.  If I ask you what colour my shirt is, and you say yellow, when it is in fact green, then you might conclude that you percieve some greens as yellows.  :ohwell:

I second Lacrymaria lacrymabunda aka weeping widow. Very exciting to find at first, because they really do have a lot of psilocybe like traits, but they arent active at all :/
