cloning jelly fungi to agar?
    #7569775 - 10/28/07 02:20 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

Anyone done this? I was cloning some other stuff and had a pseudohydnum gelatinosium on hand so I attempted to clone it. I used anti-biotic agar and after two species days most while the other two are doing some slow growth, the jelly tooth went crazy, though it very well could be contamination thats gone crazy I have no idea. From what it looks like to me is that the area around the bits of jelly I took from the center of the mushroom are short white hairs with black balls on the ends (seen with my disecting scope). At the edge of growth its longer white hairs with white balls, and then in the center area where the three different growths met its just long white hairs that are so long they are being pushed down by the lid of the petri dish. Its like a small forest in there after two days.

Thoughts, do jelly fungus have the same kind of mycellium that I would expect with the others, or is it different? My guess is that its contams gone wild, but thought I would ask before writing it off completely. I tried to transfer a bit over to a new dish, see what happens.

i was wondering the same thing. I don't have an anwser for you, but this will bump the thread and hopefully some one else will know.

I remember finding some on a log over the summer, and looking for the mycelium and not being able to find it. Its a pretty sweet fungus. Extremely fun to play with. Not quite sure how the spores are introduced to the air either.

Did you note how long it keeps for? I had a few in a ziplock in the fridge for over 2 weeks and it looked exactly the same as when I picked it. They say its edible, just tasteless, thought it might be nice as a food decoration or something, specially with a long shelf life.

My idea was if I can get some mycellium going I would go into the forest and find a super decayed log, break out some chunks into bags and PC it to sterilize, then spawn to it... who knows though if I will get any mycellium, it didn't look promising.

From Mushroom expert
Pseudohydnum gelatinosum is edible but apparently tasteless. Some authors recommend eating it raw, since it apparently turns into a gelatinous mess when cooked. I have not tried it.

Wikipedia
Pseudohydnum gelatinosum (common names include toothed jelly fungus, false hedgehog mushroom and white jelly mushroom) is an edible mushroom, which is common from Alaska to northern California. Although bland, it can be candied or marinated.

Although i may advise others in a general way regarding all types of mushroom grows, and may even post question from other forums about growing "active" mushrooms, i only grow non-"active" mushrooms and edibles.

Yeah, update this with the cleaning results if you can. Sorry I don't have direct experience; seems unlikely that pure mycelium would look like that, though.

I love the idea of using jelly fungi as garnishes

Did another transfer today. From my previous transfer there looked like bacteria around the transfer point, but out from that to the size of a silver dollar there was a very fine network of what looked like mycellium. So thin it was hard to see, took a transfer from the outer edge to a new dish, but kept this second dish to watch how it grows out as well.

Sorry, no pics at this time. Would love to take them, but I dropped my camera into the grass and now I have the 'lens error' message. If I end up buying a new one I will take some.

Well my jelly tooth grew across the plate and no signs of anything bad. Took RR's advice in another thread and did another transfer from this one to another dish. No idea if I am just growing out some contam or jelly tooth, but it smells fine and looks white and healthy.

I am going to go into the woods and get some really rotted wood, which is what they grow on in the wild, and PC it. Anyone have any recommendations on what I could 'add' to this wood to help it grow nutrient wise? I see a lot of posts for oysters adding gypsum, should I add that?

Thanks,

Cul

If i were you, i wouldn't get the most rotted wood you could get. Cause that means that it's already been nutrient drained. I would get wood thats maybe a little bit rotted. But completely rotted, i don't think would work too well.

I am not sure it would grow on anything else. Every time I have found this mushroom in the wild its growing on a log thats one step away from soil, the inside of the log just crumbles in your hand. Maybe I will try both, see what I can find.

maybe i was wrong when i said that. The one time i found it, it was growing off of a pretty sturdy log. But since you find it in rotted logs in your area, go with that.

It nature proved that it works, it works. You could try a trial of both if you wanted, but you are probably right with the rotted wood.

jelly mushrooms are a yeast varitey that needs a host. you are supposed to keep them seperate on agar. im sure the yeast would grow much fatser then your typical mycelium. this is just from what i read earlier in stamets book. i really cant go into much more detail then that without the book in front of me.
