Wheat berries versus Rye berries as spawn
    #7569558 - 10/28/07 01:23 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

my local hippie food store, that had been my supplier of rye berries for years, is now going out of business. sad, i know. so, now all that i have access to locally is wheat berries. i'm using them as a spawn for bulk hpoo/verm/kelp substrate. will they work as well as rye? if not, why? what are the nutritional/moisture differences that lead cultivators to prefer rye over wheat? thanks!

I'm no expert but I currently have 10 or so jars containing a mixture of wheat berries and millet. They've just begun to colonize and don't seem to have any serious issues. A few of the grains on the tops of my jars have dried, but that's due to the extremely dry conditions here and the fact that the jars sat for nearly a week before being inoculated.

As far as humidity, I just soaked for the usual 24 or so hours, then drain and PC; no simmering. No kernels burst (some millet did) but they doubtlessly increased the regular 25-35% in size. So far I'd give them a  Usually available pretty cheap at bulk food stores.
