Another hunt - species, better camera!
    #7569523 - 10/28/07 01:11 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

Found all these today in a well-known field. 4 varieties I think:

#1

Where - Fraser Valley, B.C.
Habitat - pasture and on soil/dung
Characteristics of the gills - light to dark brown brown, attached
Characteristics of the stem - 5-6 inches, dark brown, smooth, fibrous hollow, thicker
Characteristics of the cap - 2-5 inches inch, conical shaped, dark brown, texture = soft and somewhat slimy.
Spore print color - dark brown, almost black
No Bruising noticed
Scent of the mushroom - woody?

#2

Where - Fraser Valley, B.C.
Habitat - pasture and on soil/dung
Characteristics of the gills - light to brighter yellow, attached
Characteristics of the stem - 2-3 inches, light yellow, smooth, fibrous hollow, medium thick
Characteristics of the cap - 1-2 inches inch, dome shaped, dark brown, texture = soft and somewhat slimy.
Spore print color - light yellow?
No Bruising noticed
Scent of the mushroom - woody?

#3

Where - Fraser Valley, B.C.
Habitat - out of rotten wood
Characteristics of the gills - light brown, attached
Characteristics of the stem - 3-4 inches, dark brown, fibrous, thick
Characteristics of the cap - 4-5 inches inch, flat shaped, dark brown, texture = soft and somewhat slimy.
Spore print color - not sure
No Bruising noticed
Scent of the mushroom - quite woody

#4

Where - Fraser Valley, B.C.
Habitat - out of burnt/decaying wood chip pile
Characteristics of the gills - white, attached
Characteristics of the stem - 2-3 inches, light to dark brown, fibrous, medium
Characteristics of the cap - .5-1 inch inch, flat shaped, dark brown, texture = soft and somewhat slimy.
Spore print color - brownish
No Bruising noticed
Scent of the mushroom - again, woody

Thanks for any help!

#1 is a Panaeolus or perhaps even Psathyrella... though I'd put my money on Pan. .

#2 is Bolbitius vitellinus.

Does that look like 2 different speices in #1 then? (after I looked at it again)

They seemed to be growing side-by-side in quite moist, hay-like grass which was on a cow or dirt clod ..

Just know that they have a black spore print and got pretty big with an enlarged nipple on some ..

I am wondering about #4 though .. tons of them on the burnt wood pile ..
