Calea Z. Soil turning green?

So I have two calea zacatechichi clones that I potted up in some Black Gold potting soil with some perlite. One was just a tiny stem with a tiny shoot up top and some roots and the other is a little plant w/ maybe 10 leaves.
I'd thought I saw green on the smaller plant's soil, especially on the perlite, but thought maybe my eyes weren't seeing the right colors because of the HPS light they're under. Today I noticed that the smaller plant's green shoot had darkened and withered and the green was very noticeable on the soil. Also the bigger plant has green on the soil but not yet at the base of the plant. None of the other plants in the same condition with the same soil have done this except for my two calea.
My thought is that maybe the soil had stayed too moist and it's mold growing. The smaller calea's roots seem to be growing pretty much straight down instead of fanning out much and maybe the roots suck up enough moisture around the plant that it doesn't grow the mold by the roots as quickly.
Anyone experienced something like this before? I'll get pictures in the next day or two out in the sunlight so I can show true colors. It's a deep green color, lighter looking on the perlite.

I'd say you were watering too much. Try letting the soil dry out a little in between waterings. Perlite turning green is common. It's not necessarily a sign of overwtaering...but the fact that your plant died like that sounds like it could have been root rot. The green on the soil is probably moss rather than mold. The moss itself won't hurt your plants...but it does tend to grow in moister conditions.

Hrm that sounds about right that it's algae growing from overwatering and root rot. I transplanted the little guy to another pot with more perlite in there and haven't watered the big guy since the start of this thread.
Didn't get to take pictures today but it seems there's already been a diagnosis of me being an overeager newbie. Maybe I'll take pictures tomorrow. In the meantime here's what came in the mail today:
