possible cyans in backyard
    #7567602 - 10/27/07 06:42 PM (16 years, 6 months ago)

this was a small patch behind the fence in my backyard about a week ago. these little things were growing on woody pile of debris as you can see in the picture. at the time I was just wandering around looking for good pics of some mushrooms and just now I decided to research actives that could be in my area.

by now they're pretty much dead and black, but from this, could they have been cyans? are there species that are close lookalikes?

From my opinion they are just a look alike. Cyans are yellow in the middle and brownish on the outside.
There also lightly blue on the stem and the gills are cinnamon brown, becoming deep smoky brown.

Defiantly not cyans to me.

I dunno. The underside of the cap looks a little more brown than I usually see. I'm not sure. I'd definately look for blueing, and spore print them before I tried them.(I always do anyways...)

ahhh shit!!

right now I really wish I had read up and at least looked at a few pictures of actives before going out and looking for what I thought actives would look like.

these are quite literally in my backyard. there's a pile of wood, sticks, twigs etc, soggy particle board, poopy cat litter, and bits of garbage here and there and those were in the middle of it.

i didn't think they'd be so close to my backyard so I thought they were just more LBMs or something

I'd seek professional help from someone who knows how to identify them if I were you.
They still don't look anything like a cyan to me except for the wavy cap. =/
And the stems are a little to short and don't get any thicker at the bottom.

Not everyone is, but there are certainly folks here in this forum who are qualified to make positive identifications.

Welcome to Shroomery, I'm sure you'll see what I'm saying soon enough.

There is a reason certain people are moderators of this forum and cyans are one of the most common mushrooms featured in here. Its ok to be wrong sometimes.

Don't cyan patches reappear annually for a while? The good news is, that all of the spores were allowed to introduce themselves to the air, and you should get getting more. (or so they say)

ok well, take your finger, and put it over parts of my avatar until it stops freaking you out (if that occurs). Then tell me which part you covered up, and we will be at the bottom of it.

I kinda see what you mean though. After i stare at it long enough it sets in. :crazy2:

You're right, it's just an opinion but it's pretty obvious that these are Ps. Cyanescens!
And BTW: Cyan caps aren't "yellow" in the middle and brown on the outside. They can be, but only if the turn dry. Cyans caps of specimens that grow in area were the moisture content is correct, are completely caramel coloured (nothing yellow at all). Additional there's actually nothing blue on he stems as well, as long as the moisture content is correct. Normally the stems are perfectly white and only bruise blue when touched, too wet, or too dry.

This is what they look like, when the moisture content is right:

And this is what they look like when they it's too dry:

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.
