Not MORE Rye Questions

Sorry.. I'll make it quick. I can't decide whether to soak and simmer.. or just soak..? I've only tried the S & S with varied results.. Fast colonization (that was nice) but almost 15% bacillus rate. I've never used any lime, gypsum, or 50/50 coffee water. I've only worked with grain this one time. I spawn on Horse Poo, does this make a difference? Is it 100% ideal to make sure the rye is dry enough on the outside of the kernels to fall easily from a tilted spoon, in either method? I call it the "No Rye Left Behind Act" Sorry if I missed any of this information... Kick me

if you use a pressure cooker you shouldn't get any bacterial contams.

Yes, soak for at least 12 hours AND simmer for 45 minutes, then let them strain with a paper towel on top of them till they are moist but not wet.
Load it up in your jars 75% full or so then follow proper PC procedure (ie. foil tops, tape). also do not start your 1hr count down until the PC reaches the 15psi mark.
If you still have problems with contams try putting a piece of tyvek over the "cap" of the jar held down by the "rim". and if you STILL have problems with contams you might want to re-check your sterile procedures or maybe your print, syringe, or LC you are using.

i've never used rye so excuse my ignorance...
isnt it recommended that you do a soak AND simmer with Rye?
pressure cooking is a must, of course.
in most cases.. its better to be a little on the dry side rather then too wet.
you gotta be careful when simmering. only allow what, 5% of the berries to explode.. the less the better.
like i said.. never used rye berries. i need to start looking harder for those though.. i hear they colonize pretty nicely

I like how RR demonstrates properlly cleaned grains at the end, if after pc'ing, shaking and allowing to cool if the rye grains still stick in abundence to the jar, there is going to be a moisture issue.
I like to run a gallon of boiling water over my grains after the simmer to remove any excess starch/debris that may be on the kernels, once they all seperated invidually they're ready to pc. I roll my jar's like RR does after they're cool to allow for even moisture distrobution and to see just how well I did.

Yeah, I think I will stick with the same method... I did not use boiling water to rinse... Not to mention I did not rinse thuroughly before soaking... These might help me out.. Thanks everyone.. Can't wait till I'm back up and running..
