Perlite vs Verm in substrate

Hi all,
My friend used perlite instead of vermaculite in the substrate jars. Is that ok? I see it can be used instead of verm in the grow chamber, but what about in the substrate jars?
Also, the holes in the jar lids were poked before steaming them for 90 mins. Doesn't that cause the jars to dry out? They were covered with two tight layers of alum. foil.
Thanks!
Edit: changed title, because I was misusing the term casing. I'm speaking about the BRF/perlite mix put in the jars for inoculation.

Perlite is a humidifier, it goes on the bottom not the top. Edit: Of tubs, I wouldn't use perlite at all in jars, it releases too much moisture. There's not much you can do now, just wait and see.

Thought I'd bump the question, as well as update...
My friend got some fine grain verm, and steralized some substrate jars today. The perlite jars are still sitting with nothing growing in them. My friend will keep those jars around, but he thinks they're a lost cause.

there has to be nutrient of some sort. neither verm nor perlite have any nutritional value, oops, i just re-read and noticed that you are using brf. vermiculite absorbs water, like a sponge, and perlite has abundant surface area(meaning more surface for water), making it a great humidifier.
im pretty sure the substrate needs to hold moisture(thus feeding the mushrooms the moisture they need)rather than wick moisture, like perlite does. i dont know that it cant be used, but i would stick to something that definately works, and works well with the verm!

hes using perlite in his brf jars. the only time he said casing was when he corrected himself for missusing the word. but homeless you can probably answer his question.
can perlite be used in place of vermiculite in brf jars?

Thanks for the responses! I'll have my friend just ditch the perlite jars, he's got an incubator setup and going, so hopefully the verm jars will take off quickly!
