If its decent spec then i'd really consider if you need a linux box. If so, then yeah, linux is great, you could even make it into a server if you have a use for one.

If not, or its crappy, then id rip it apart and salvage the RAM and HDD (and any drives you may find useful e.g. dvd-rw). Even an extra 256mb of RAM can make a difference.

i might jack the disk drives if they are in better shape than mine. i'm pretty sure stealing ram from this computer would be a down grade.

it has a 40gig hdd that i might want to make a slave drive, but i'm very interested in this server idea. what are some possibilities w/ a server?

i don't need a linux box, but i've wanted one for a while now. do they make windows or mac emulators so i can run windows and mac applications?

I've got a linux server here that's doing a number of things:

- Media server to a hacked Xbox (movies, music, photos, games, etc)
- Print server for all my computers
- Backup file server
- Light web serving for my domain
- Development box

You can run Windows apps via Wine or Cedega but not Mac apps.

Running linux is a great idea

sounds great. is there a way for me to wipe this computer clean, and i mean clean. my little sister had it last and, well, the last time she brought her computer here, it had gonoherpasyphilaids. if i'm going to put linux on, i'd like to remove windows.

I like ubuntu, feisty fawn edition, its easy to start and has a nice GUI shaggy. Lykos, I don't quite understand what you have your server doing, and what version of linux are you running? I have a comp on xp as a server that I'd like to change to linux to do all of those things. Transcode / stream movies to xbox 360(i thought it was only possible through media center, which linux can't emulate?), and also games if possible (I didn't know forwarding games was possible either).
