kiln dried alder...

This is for future referrences....
I run a cabinet shop...if you couldn't tell from my handle.
Thing is, I use alder for probably 80% of my builds....hell, I have at least 500 ft2 laying around at any one time.
It is kiln dried though...dry as a desert bone. Can it still be used for spawn? Seems to me I should just soak it like everything else huh?
I still have to figure out how to get good sized chips too. Most of the tools create fine or medium dust of course. I am thinking the planer....
Thx, M

with my experience using a planer its usually fine, coiled pieces of wood... should make out to be an interesting spawn.
but me.. i've never used wood. maybe some of the more experienced could give you a hand to that question.

Kiln dried lumber works great. I've used it many times. To get the larger pieces you need for fruiting, simply use your band or table saw to cut it into 1/2" slices. To fill the gaps between the larger pieces where the fruits will form, use course(NOT fine) sawdust. I'd suggest supplimenting it with wheat or rice bran prior to sterilization. Good luck. RR
