after all the b/s of getting my wbs right for inoculation, i knocked them up about 3 days ago, and i dont like to shake right after inoculation so i can see results quicker, then i shake, which i did shake these 4 jars immediately after these pictures were taken.

looks like myc to me. Give it a few more days and it should thicken and whiten up substantially...then branch out in rhizo

after looking closer at the jars.. i can see now you do have some myc growth at the bottom.

If it eats up your whole jar in another day, it's cobweb. Otherwise, stick it out and see what happens.

it looks pretty airy and grey like cobweb.. if it covers the top in the next day or two try a squirt of peroxide in a water bottle sprayer and hope for the best ..

multispore inoculations can often have cottony rather than rhizomorphic (root-like) growth. Not a contamination, just not strong genetics. That's what a multispore is all about...100,000,000 compatible genetic variants in each print - some of them take the shortbus.

one thing I've noticed, when it IS cobweb in your jar is that it's usually really hard to see, it's usually not that white, but then mycelium is usually not that light
also when it's cobweb it usually builds up ALOT of moisture on the glass mycelium can do this too, but not as quickly as cobweb
if it is cobweb, it should start maturing pretty soon and you'll see little black dots all over it
my suspicion is, i think it is mycelium and your water content is slightly off perhaps they colonize on the top because that's where the grain is driest thanks to gravity

That SO looks like cobweb to me. I guess you can only wait but that looks really airy and shit like what I see on the top of my houseplant soil when it gets too moist..

Were the jars shook after inoculation? It's kinda weird that it'd be starting on the top in such a disproportionate way..

yeah my wager is contam, if you shook em, and colonization is only ontop like that...that's kinda w-e-i-r-d. lets all hope for the best though keep us updated!!!!! <<good vibes to your jars>>

That seems to be a lot of growth for only 3 days after inoculation. At that point, I generally only have a few specs of growth. Especially speedy growth generally means contamination. But I'll give you the same advice everyone else has. Just keep an eye on them and see where things go. Definitely watch for any unwanted colors (aka green).

Out of the 80 people a day who post that question, I've seen about 3 that are actually cobweb mold.
That's a small, young growth of a mycelium that I'd guess is a bit too whispy for mushrooms. Like xax said, you'll see it sporulate in a few days and know for sure...but it's very likely a contamination, and almost certainly not cobweb.

ok, likely a contam, not likely cobweb. be on the look out for colors. and at least out of 80 ppl a day, i have pictures. sorry i dont know exactly what everything i see in the world of mycology looks like. i will someday, but im new, so for now i ask!
ill try to post again tomorrow, but ill be away i think for about 2 days. i guess thatll give it time to decide if it wants to be cobweb or myc, or some other contam.
wish me the best

Sorry that really wasn't an irritation with you as much as this board's structure in general. Rumors and half-truths tend to permeate lots, "cobweb mold is the only common whitish mold" being one of them. Cobweb doesn't often show up in jars, and diagnosing molds in jars has to be one of the least challenging aspects of this hobby.
Anyhow, don't count on identifying molds as much as determining mold mycelium v. mushroom mycelium. Mushroom mycelium can be whispy, but that barely-there, and likely fast-growing puffball, is a harbinger of all that is evil.

damnit, all who come bearing bad news!!!
j/k, when i woke up this morning, i checked the jars, and this is after shaking them yesterday, and whatever this "substance" is, seems to be doing well(whatever it is) on the grains all over.
one of them for sure has a scary(er) spot on it, it is brighter white than any of that "substance" and maybe im just trippin, but it looks like a green dot whith white around it!

Dunno...any mold will have that characteristic (color, surrounded by white mycelium), as it takes a few days after growth to begin sporulating.
That doesn't really look like trichodermia mycelium to me though...usually trich has a nasty, very dense cottage-cheese look to it in its infancy.
But yes, post pictures later; it'll help explain why the jar was contaminated, and with what type of mold.

im fuckin pissed!
well not furious, just a little perturbed. all my wbs, went to shit, all that whispywhite shit started developing black dots all over it, so i chucked em all. (my LC also has a couple, just a couple black specks, but is very whispy/spindly)
and two of my popcorn that i was really hoping would come around got sent out with them. FUCK! i hope 2 quarts of popcorn spawned to coco coir is enough to do an 18quart monotub

That should be plenty. I spawn 2 quarts of WBS to h/poo in 18 GALLON tubs.

ok, so is there really a ratio of colonized grain to bulk substrate???
i was worried that i wasnt going to have enough grain, but sounds to me like i can spawn it to a much bigger amount than what i need.

1:4 spawn:bulk is the most recommended...
i try to keep it 1:3 1:2 to make it speedy.
i used 12 quart dishpans and put about 3 and a half quarts of colonized wbs mixed with coir.
thats just me though.
