Alternative Cyan chips?
    #7566082 - 10/27/07 08:45 AM (16 years, 3 months ago)

So I am going to try to start a few cyan patches here in Michigan. I have some myc-cardboard. The one the thing I'm wondering about though is what kind of wood chips to use. We have no alder trees around here, is there something that would be comprable?

any hardwood should work .. google hardwoods and find out what you can get from that list

Will any work though? I know oak is very dense, and if you want to cultivate shitakes on oak it will take a few years to fruit. Birch is very porous and will only produce fruit for a year or so. Maple has alot of sugar in it, I don't know if thats good or bad.
Does anyone have any personal experience with alternative chips? Or know the specific features of alder that make it ideal for cyans and what other local trees have those same traits?

Psilocybe cyanescens will grow on alder, cottonwood, oak , birch and beech, Douglus fir will also support fruitings
This is from GG&MM I dont know which wood lasts longer in a bed before
breaking down but after each season you would add more chips to the bed anyway .

I even found a beautiful flush of cyanescens on a pine branch this year. I wish I had taken a picture. Use mostly hardwoods, but don't worry if some other woods get mixed in. Avoid cedar.

Thanks for the info. I've heard to aviod conifers, especially cedar, which I will. But I did find a pretty huge patch growing under some pine trees this year too, in Seattle.
