actually yes, I do. But I suppose all my years of physics class probably helped me out a bit
Don't feel bad if you can't grasp it, it's literally impossible for us to completely understand the higher dimensions, no matter how good the explanation is. The most we can hope for is a vague understanding of the concepts

not at all. i've heard that before, and I've tried to figure it out and wrap my head around the idea, but it just doesn't work.

its pretty easy for me to imagine. lacking physical senses to perceive it directly i doubt i can picture it correctly though.

Yes, I do. 5D and up is where it gets fuzzy for me, although I've constructed a penteract myself.

go find a cube. put it in a spot, look at it, then move it four times. imagine if when you moved the cube no time passed so the cube would be in all four places at once. as you move the cube it looks like it smears or something, but when you go back into time all you see is the cube sitting there (but in four places at once). in this case we're pretending time doesn't exist for awhile, so its the extra dimension, but in reality it would be another physical dimension. this example is obviously not scientifically accurate, but should give you a basis for imagining it.

wouldn't that make it into a sphere? or something similar?
im sure computer programming and some nifty graphics could explain it.
shouldn't the total area of 4d, if we started with 2(1d), come out to 16?

I think I get it as much as a human really can.
If you want to see a picture of one, you can can find a picture of its 2 dimensional shadow online. Just like that regular cube you have in your picture. There all the lines are the same length, and all the angles are right angles. But it doesnt look like that does it? Thats because you cannot see in 3-D and can only see 2-D cross sections of the cube. Now you cant see in 4-D either, but you can see a 2-D cross section of a hyper cube. Look in google images or something, you will see that it looks like a cube within a cube. When you look at it remember, all the lines are the same length and all the angles are right angles in 4-D space.
edit- another interesting pattern... See the line in the one dimensional case? Note that line is what makes up the boundary of the two dimensional case (the square). Now look at the square, its shape makes up the boundary of the three dimensional case. I wonder what makes up the boundary of the four dimensional case?

i honestly think that the answer(if one) is beyond human comprehension. ill try to work on it tomorrow though. ill do some geometry and see if i can find anything.

Dude, the answer is there, I lead you too it! The three dimensional shape makes up the boundary to the fourth dimension. Look at the pattern.
I dug this up from a post I made a while back..., maybe it will illuminate you a bit
Quote:
You should read "Flatland". My signature is a quote from that book, where the three dimensional creature shows the two dimensional creature the zeroth dimension and its sole inhabitant.
Here are some analogies... As a 3-D creature we can only see in 2-D. We can only see a plane, we cannot simultaneously see the front and back side of an object. A 2-D creature would only see in 1-D, that would be a line. So a 2-D creature only sees a cross section of what we can see.
For example, 3-D creature sees a ball falling in front of him. The 2-D creature would only see a cross section, that is they would see the bottom of the ball as a point. Then as the ball fell past their field of vision, the point would grow to a line the width of the ball, thats the midpoint of the ball. Then the line would shrink to a point again, this point being the top of the ball. So while the 3-D creature sees the whole ball at once, the 2-D creature can only see a line grow in size and then shrink back to nothing.
So, taking this analogy into the 4th dimension (spacial, not temporal). The 4-D creature would see in 3-D. That is he could see the back and front of a ball at the same time. If a 3-D creature were to look at a 4-D object, we could only see a 2-D cross section of it. So we would see a strange 2-D shape grow and then shrink in front of us (like the 2-D creature sees the line grow and shrink).
If you are familiar with math, you can think of this... A 1-D line in a 2-D plane takes up the entire 1-D realm (the number line). A 2-D plane in a 3-D space takes up the entire 2-D space (the cartesian coordinate system). A 3-D 'plane' in 4-D space takes up the entire 3-D space (three dimensional coordinate system). So our entire 3-D space is a sphere in 4-D, or a hypersphere. That may be hard to grasp...
Another good book on dimsions is a kids book called "The boy who reversed himeslf".
this makes some sense. but id still like to know what 4d looks like.

if we saw a 4d creature it would actually look like a 3d creature to us....
edit: nevermind i didn't read your whole post.
the point is 4d monsters are running around pretending to be 3d humans. see david icke.

We actually cant see in three dimensions, we can only see in two. We have 'depth perception' but, cannot see simultaneously depth, width and height.
But you are probably right, our binocular vision and other depth perception abilities would give up the impression of a three dimensional object, just like when we see a person.
Anyway what is david icke? Did he write sci-fi novels or something?
