Is it necessary to have air intake from the outside? (gutter elbow)

It isn't necessary but it acts as a source of fresh air exchange. It's like killing two birds with one stone. i.e. you don't have to buy another machine or cut a bunch of holes in your setup.

To avoid burning out motors, what about creating 2 outputs? I was thinking about doing this and running one humidifier with 2 hoses into one greenhouse, but would this decrease my humidity levels or would it stay the same because the unit is adapt to higher ouputs of humidity through the larger main output? Just a thought, I wouldn't mind some input on this one being as I was to get a second GH and it'd be cool not to have to purchase 2 new Humidifiers...

This is a great idea. I was working on something similar, but not quite so easy. Thanks for saving me a decent chunk of time.

Why are people so adamant about keeping their humidifiers out of the grow chamber?, I see no advantage what so ever. Are vicks humidifiers the absolute best?

Wow! Talk about a blast from the past!
Humidifiers are big and take up valuable shelving real estate. Some people can't or won't sacrifice the space. Vicks humidifiers are available and relatively cheap, and that's why people use them.

Actually, bumping an old but relevant thread shows you were using the search engine as we request people to do. We frown on people bumping old threads for no reason, but this is different.
Vicks 400 used to be a good unit. Then they shipped production and the jobs associated with it to Mexico a few years ago, and I never had a single one last over three months after that. We used to run them in our house all winter to make up for dry air caused by our wood stove. Now we just keep a pot of water boiling on the stove.
Good luck getting much out of one of the new units. I wish I knew of a quality replacement, but don't. RR

Thank you for clarifying RR,
That's sad to hear, after reading through the forums I figured the v400 was a solid option. I was just about ready to order 3.. I think I will still end up buying em' eventually. For now going with OHM's monoTEK, to save on time, effort and $ in setting up. I still want to build a tent but i'm fairly new to the this. I am patient though and the the future is bright.

Aren't these units designed so that you can replace the ceramic membranes, as they become 'clogged up' with mineral deposits, as thy are with the 'foggers' that people use in ponds. I suppose using filtered water would be out of the question?
