Newbie!!!
    #756425 - 07/18/02 12:59 PM (22 years, 3 months ago)

Hi All,
I have a few questions,I'm new at this so please help me out.First let me tell you
what i have been doing...Instead of using the1/2pint jars,I used the Quart size.
I had to double my recipe a few times.Recipe includes,Vermiculite, brown rice flour
and water. What i need to know is,Do i put the jars in a dark place or a light place
with temps around 80" or above??? Also how long do you think it will take for the
colonizations to happen?
Thanks You
Cecil

Try reading some teks. Like the pf tek(http://www.fanaticus.com). You have to store your jars in a completely dark place. Depending on strain, temperatures should be around 80-85 F. Since you are using quart sized jars, it can take 2+ months for them to fully colonize. But you should get more fruits, since the cakes will be bigger.

Ted: "Uh yeah, and I got you this paper bag to stop you from looking like James Brown in the Morning."
Darlene: "Oh come now, I don't look anything like James Brown."
Ted: "Hey kids, who does your mom look like in the morning?"
Kids... in unison: "James Brown!"
Darlene, "All right, thats enough... It's poison spaghetti for dinner tonight."

Build yourself an incubator - Read the Shroomery Cultivation FAQ - On how to do so...

You can find teks there. Place your jars in your incubator. Wait wait wait and wait

You might see growth in 3 days maybe 7 or maybe 10 be patient that is the key here..

If healthy growth isnt seen in 2-3 weeks then throw the substrate out dont be discourage everyone gets contams and fails - start over by reviewing your steps and improving them if needed. Be more STERILE as well while making your jars that is key here. If you have a pressure cooker use it!

Good luck

no no no. you gotta have them in absolute darkness. and try your hard not to handle the jars so much and check growth. check em once a week, and after you've seen that they're 100% colonized, leave in the dark for another 3-4 days. try not to get too impateiant, i know its tuff. i get the urges to, just tell your self that the more you check, the less yield you'll get. that'll keep your hands off those jars

why are you using quart jars?? youd get more mushrooms if you split that quart into 1/2 pints... leaving you with 8 jars... they would colonize twice as fast and have a lot more surface area to volume ratio...

surface area dosn't have much to do with it. he should get about the same, assuming the quart jars ever completely colonize before the mycelium is starved of oxygen or starts to deteriorate. i wouldn't try this without a filter disks and a top layer of verm, but then again, i would never try this.

And tried anyway.
