Plumpynut - saving lives in Africa
    #7562097 - 10/26/07 08:10 AM (16 years, 3 months ago)

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/10/19/60minutes/main3386661.shtml

Saw this segment on 60 Minutes the other day and it is quite amazing. They tested this product out in the region of Niger that had the highest malnutrition rates, and after a few months, it ended up with the lowest malnutrition rates in the country. An amazing development to be sure. Cheap and easy to manufacture, and the lil kids love it. Check out this terrific story.

No it's not!

Quote:

Plumpynut is a remarkably simple concoction: it is basically made of peanut butter, powdered milk, powdered sugar, and enriched with vitamins and minerals. It tastes like a peanut butter paste. It is very sweet, and because of that kids cannot get enough of it.

That means a hefty dose of protein, carbs, fats, essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals.

Quote:

They coulda been doing this long ago.

But they didn't. Now they do and it saves many lives. It's easy to criticize something and offer no alternative.

This sounds like a program I'd like to add to my charities. At $1 a day your buck goes a long way.

This is great news. I just hope its stupid name doesn't hamper its popularity.

If you're a mother with a baby bloated with protein starvation and with skin-over-bone limbs, I don't think a stupid brandname will put you off.

the key to development is empowering women - unfortunately, in most underdeveloped countries - that is not a popular policy.  I could go into great detail as to why and how to lower the birthrate, and if someone asks i will - but its a lot of typing so i'ma choose not to for the time being

It is not the mothers with starving children who will be deciding which aid projects receive funding or not. As superficial as it is, image matters.

Well, anyway...glad to see some people appreciate this for what it is..

Whiskey, I think the name will actually go over with the barely-English-speaking Africans as being very catchy.

The truly amazing thing about Plumpynut is its cheap, easy manufacture.  An African government could, with a very small budget, easily build a Plumpynut factory and put into action an effective distribution service.  Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors w/o Borders) is already working on this with Niger and other African nations.

And remember the idea isn't to feed them with plumpynut all their lives but rather to raise them from the depths of malnutrition while helping them work to rebuild their lives and become self-sufficient.

It's hard to advance one's family, tribe, people, when the next meal is the primary worry.

they need to starve to death. it's a natural process. unfortunate as it is, but people have to die so others can live. a few more industrialized nations and we will all starve to death.

Other people can't live unless they die?

How do you figure?

Human beings are not locusts. We have the capability to produce enough food to feed everybody.

Fuck that! It doesn't have to be like that, the situation as it exists is entirely artificial and manmade. We do not have to let it happen.

Quote:

people have to die so others can live

And who'll be the judge who is to live and who is to die? If you rob Bill Gates from all his billions except one, then you can supply the world with clean drinking water and give all the needy kids their Plumpynut and an education to boot.
