JANESVILLE, Wis. — Hunters in Walworth County stumbled on millions of dollars worth of marijuana plants, uncovering a major growing operation, a drug enforcement agent said.
The hunters found 1,600 plants growing in two areas on public hunting grounds, said Sgt. Jeff Patek of the Walworth County Drug Unit.
They found a spot with 1,000 plants on Sept. 10, and a second area with 600 plants Saturday, Patek said. The plants were 10- to 15-feet tall and ready to be harvested, he said.
More than two dozen officers from five counties helped clear the plants from the latest field on Thursday. They put the drug in tarps that a helicopter carried to a nearby field. Then the drug was piled into pickup trucks and taken to a county burn pit for destruction.
No arrests have been made yet.
Law enforcement officials found food, propane heaters and other items at two campsites where the growers appeared to have been staying.
"You had to get right up on top of it before seeing everything,'' said a hunters who asked not to be identified because the growers haven't been arrested. "They had it all hidden with vegetation.''
The underbrush covering the second site was so thick police didn't spot it when they destroyed the first field in September.
Doug Miller said the field was only about 250 yards from his home. He could smell the marijuana being chopped Thursday.
"I assume I’m safer now," said Miller. "I’ll bet money they are not coming back.”
Miller said he had seen more cars parking at the public hunting ground but thought they belonged to coyote or deer hunters.
The fields would have provided about 800 pounds of sellable marijuana, which would be worth $2.8 million and $3.8 million on the street, Patek estimated.

just think about all the stories that don't make it to the news, where the hunters just take a little bit for themselves to smoke and everyone is high, hungry, and happy.

Why don't I ever get that lucky? I would never turn something like that in, I would harvest as much as I could take and get the fuck out before anyone catches me. I hate how the wrong people get "lucky" like that.

10-15 ft tall? I'm surprised they also didn't calculate the plants as yielding a pound each of the dank.

No kidding.
I'm just trying to imagine the appearance/smell of a group of (1000) 10-15ft tall plants. Mmm, mmm, mmm.

it doesn't take into account how many males and females. Just a number BS the cops like to play. The illicit weed business is an economic boom in some parts of the country. Communities depend on it. It is grown EVERYWHERE!!

They found the first patch in September, by then all of the male plants would have been killed. And it also says that they found a bunch of Styrofoam cups out there indicating that they started the plants somewhere else and moved them out there. I bet they started out with 1600 clones so that way they knew they'd be growing nothing but females.
I wonder how many people were a part of this, 1600 plants is A LOT of gardening. I'm glad no one's been caught yet.

Northern Wisconsin is so empty, there are thousands of places you could do this.
But deer hunters EVERYWHERE for a few months out of the year...
