Cornfused. :(

OK, so I have been researching about dunking/harvesting a casing. I have read contradictory reports, and want to know what most are doing now. After a flush, when there are a bunch of ready shrooms, and then a lot of pins... do you take EVERYTHING, or just those that are ready, or near ready?

The reason I ask is because I was reading about dunking a casing, and read a few that said it's ok to leave the pins, just dunk, then patch over areas that have been picked. Then I read DON'T do that... take EVERYTHING that resembles a shroom, then dunk, then patch. What is the best, or at least time proven recent method?

Also, is it OK to use a lead weight to weigh my casings down? Thank you for your help.

You read all kinds of crap here because it seems some new growers make shit up and tell it to other new growers. Pick respected members and take what they say to heart.

You pick the fruits that are ready to pick and leave the pins. The easiest way to re-hydrate a bulk substrate that is dry is to pour water around the edges of the tray so that the substrate floats a bit. Leave it overnight and pour off the excess water. Mist the casing layer well. Never pick the pins because it's common with many species to set pins for the first few flushes at the time of first flush. These pins remain dormant until their turn comes. If you pick them, you ruin future harvests.

Lead should never be used near food. Use a rock or something non-toxic.

typically I like to keep my flushes pretty steady by timing harvests to be at the same time and not peice-meal, however when dunking I make sure to take all mature fruits and any aborted pins. Most newly formed pins will survive the dunking period and those that don't will become aborts that you can pluck at the end of the next flush.

The only real issue comes in with the semi-mature fruits that aren't much past the pinning stage (e.g. only 1/2" tall, but bigger than a pin) because they tend to not recover and end up as an abort after a long dunk.

Keep in mind that inoculating or whatever in front of a flow hood won't help your bad substrate, your bad inoculant, your bad sterile procedure, etc. etc. etc. It's not a +3 flowhood of magic, it's just a tool.
