I was driving out in the country last night on my lunch break from work and I had just reminded myself to look for it so I pulled over and got out of my car, and I just saw a huge shooting star, went all the way across the horizon, it was the fastest and longest one I've ever seen, no comet though.

Just for kicks I went out just now and snapped a couple shots from my porch. This little guy has become amazingly bright in just a couple days!
Sony DSC-N2 Both exposures 10 seconds at f2.8 First one was set at ISO 100, second one at ISO 200.

i saw it last night, fucking amazing. if you are really looking at it you can tell that its far blurrier and more diffuse of a light source than the surronding stars.....
so, its a commet, in motion as i would imaginde, how is it going to move relative to the constelation that it currently located in? it forms a nice little almost perfect icosoles triangle in its present location.
btw its located in perseus.... and apparently now the amount of gas that surronds the commet is larger than jupiter, i bet that itll be even brighter toinght, hell im going to go look at it now.

Its been cloudy here for a week. Haven't seen it again until tonight. It has become very hard to see with the naked eye (at least with the city lights) but it still shows up nicely in photographs. In fact, I'd say even better then before.
Here is the view from my porch right now. 17P/Holmes is the "fuzzy star" near the bottom and right of center. This 30 second exposure shows a slight distortion/elongation of the stars due to the Earths rotation.

I think I'm going to track down a person in the astronomy department at my school and see if I can view this comet in the observatory. I'll get pics if possible.

yes, it is easily seen still, if you have some binoculars, look at it through them, then you cant miss it, as it will be many times bigger than any star.

Still very visible. Went out tonight with my telescope. Wish i had a camera attachment. Nice and big, still a bit hazy with my scope, but i can definatly tell its forming a tail. Amazing sight!!
Not only that it has now become the largest object in the solar system, its now bigger than the sun!!!
http://spaceweather.com/

GIANT COMET: "Formerly, the sun was the largest object in the Solar System," says University of Hawaii astronomer David Jewett. "Now, Comet 17P/Holmes holds that distinction." On Nov. 9th, a team of Hawaii astronomers led by Rachel Stevenson measured the diameter of the comet's expanding debris cloud: 1.4 million kilometers, slightly larger than the sun itself.
This composite image prepared by Jewett shows a Nov. 9th photo of the comet beside the sun and Saturn for scale. To photograph the comet, Stevenson et al used the 3.6 meter Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope atop Mauna Kea, "one of the few professional instruments still capable of capturing the whole comet in one image," notes Jewett.
Comet Holmes exploded on Oct. 23th and it has been expanding ever since. How big will it get? See for yourself. The comet is visible to the naked eye as a fuzzball in the constellation Perseus. With only a backyard telescope you can see the comet's debris cloud in crisp detail and watch it expand from night to night. Nov. 19th is a good night to look: The comet will glide by the star Mirfak (alpha Persei) and appear to swallow it--a sight not to be missed: sky map, ephemeris.
