i've found this quote by frank zappa:
"The sad thing about the sixties was the weak-mindedness of the so-called radicals and the way that they managed to get co-opted. I think one of the things that helped that happen was LSD. It's the only chemical known to mankind that will convert a hippie to a yuppie."
i'm interested in what you think about it
only serious and elaborate answers please!

zappa didn't do drugs and wouldn't let people in his band do drugs so idk why its relevant to "the psychedelic experience" at all but whatever floats your boat

He's being provocative. I wouldn't try to analyze it too much.

Well, I think FZ was right.
FZ wasn't opposed to drugs. He was opposed to having people in his band who were using drugs because in his experience users were more likely to flake out on him.
To paraphrase him, he wasn't opposed to drugs. A drug is just a chemical. He was opposed to people who think taking a chemical is a license to act like an asshole.
Also he spent 10 days or so in jail on a bogus vice charge, so he wasn't willing to do time again because someone in his organization got busted or got him busted.
LSD offers a kind of awareness, but not political awareness. And sorry folks, but it also leads to the Beatles investing money in people who say they can make ESP-powered flying machines.
And yuppies.
Coke helped a little with that too.

Zappa was very over rated. He was a good musician, but wrote idiotic songs that were a farce to listen to. If he had done entheogens,I'll bet his music would have been better.

Listening to some of his albums and probably some of his interviews, it's clear that FZ saw the hippie movement as a popular culture happening full of hypocrisy.
Maybe he was referring to musicians making music for what he saw to be the wrong reasons; music that makes money or preaches vain idealist messages without containing any actual musical soul or viable meaning.
When people get ideas they try to market them. And when they market their ideas they want to be #1, so sharing is replaced by secrecy and competition.
A lot of great things came out of the era without a doubt, but it's not so hard to imagine some of the problems that lay just beneath the surface. FZ was often a bit extreme in his views, but I think he was aware of it and made others aware of it. So at least he harbored some level of honesty that many of the hippie 'true-lifers' could only claim to possess.
Maybe.
