so i had an old syringe and no verm. there are lots of "this-instead-of-vermiculite" threads here so i thought i'd try using peat. it's not peat moss, some sort of a mixture of cow/horse poo and peat moss. anyway i had no clue of pH levels or whatever, i just boiled 3 jars. no dry verm layer.
four days later i noticed some growth in one jar.

i'd personally like to see how this works out. just one layer of foil over the jar, the other jars got a bit dry so i made a fresh syringe of just plain sterilized water and rehydrated them.
trivial and meaningless as it may seem i just wanna see what happens :P

That's the perfect range. Unfortunately it's also the perfect range for molds. In addition, peat holds less than half the water of vermiculite, so supplying the flush with moisture is going to be a problem. RR

iunno about the choice of replacing the verm with peat, the reason vermiculite is used is for aeration and for a water reservoir
it's been my experience that mycelium grows much quicker through well aerated substrate (ie: grains) so that potentially may slow your cakes progress down a bit poo tends to get muddy and compacts itself
i've been experimenting with poo cakes myself to try and get a good orissa india clone i still can't get orissa india to colonize anything BUT poocakes it seems to LOVE it whereas other strains just spider around forever
for my cakes, i've just been blending poo with brf and adding hydrated vermiculite

I have been wondering lately what would happen if you mixed slim-fast powder in with the BRF cakes, I didn't think the idea deserved it's own post but I wanted to see what you guys thought. That shit has lots of nutrients and vitamins and crap in it.

Nutrients and vitamins and crap for humans, not mycelium.

the jar is almost done. no moisture seems to be lost as there is condensation on the side of the uncolonized jars. should be able to birth it & dunk it soon.
