Doctors trying cannabis to treat chronic sick in hospital
October 25, 2007 - eastlondonadvertiser.co.uk

TOP doctors at the Royal London Hospital are treating chronically sick patients with cannabis.

They are working on a study to see whether cannabis taken in a pill helps slow the progression of multiple sclerosis.

Research has already produced encouraging results, says the hospital NHS trust.

The consultants are investigating whether the drug can at least reduce the severity of symptoms associated with the disease.

The trial seeks a treatment for progressive MS, which is the more severe of the two types of the disease, which is disabling most cases.

Prof Gavin Giovannoni, neurologist at Barts and The London NHS Trust, has conducted extensive research and believes the trial could pave the way to treatments to diminish its progression.

"International research has indicated cannabis taken in a pill form could benefit those suffering from progressive MS by halting or slowing further development of the disease," he revealed.

"This trial is vital in terms of finding a treatment to stop MS progressing as well as lessening its severity."

MS is a chronic disease that affects the central nervous system and usually develops between the ages of 20 and 40, affecting more women than men. The exact cause is unknown and there is no cure.

Symptoms include muscle weakness, fatigue, pain and difficulties with coordination, speech, sight and balance.

Nine patients at the Royal London are involved in the trial that Prof Giovannoni is conducting with fellow consultants Dr Giles Elrington and Dr Ben Turner.

It involves them taking capsules twice a day over three years. One-in-three is given placebo tablets.

Conclusions of the trial will be available in four years' time.

The research at Whitechapel is part of a nationwide trial, supported by the Medical Research council, involving 600 MS sufferers participating in several locations across the UK, including the Royal London.
