I could not find any BRF so i just bought whole grain and tried to grind it up. When I grounded it up it did not totally make flour, there are many small chunks of grain all around. Will this still work in my BRF jars?

I found that homemade chunky BRF colonize twice as fast as store bought. But you still want mostly flour.

I hear that boiling will work, but I used a PC for my cakes so I couldn't say for sure.

steaming the brf in a pot is an easier alternative than using a PC. i've done both and both work well. if you have trouble grinding the grains into powder try using a cheap coffee grinder from wal mart. 20 dollars is good enough. just gotta hold that button down for a bit and shake the stuff around while you grind to get the full effect.

I will try to grind it all the way down by my concern is will it still get sterilized with a steamer when there is whole grains in there?

Whole grains MUST be pressure cooked, whether or not they've been ground to a flour. Brown rice flour can be steamed, because rice doesn't harbor bacterial endospores. Whole grains do. RR

Alright, so brown rice flour or whole brown rice is not a whole grain? So if it is either BRF or half chopped rice and flour it does not need to be PC'd? Someone please verify whether or not I need a PC.

I am listening to him I am just unsure if brown rice is a whole grain or not. If it is a whole grain and I have some chunks of rice and not all totally flour in my substrate then it needs to be pressure cooked thats my question.

What you have isn't what RR was talking about. You *should* be fine, though I too have never gone without a PC

are you saying you brought brown rice, ground it up, but there are still chunks of rice in it? Steam one jar for a few hours, inoculate and see if it works?

Ok thanks for the help I just wanted to make sure I was good by steaming them. I have limited access to spores and I cannot waste any. I am looking for a PC but for now I am planning on going with the boiling method.
