No humidity with perlite?

I have my fruiting chamber in a closet and my cakes are on a pan thats placed on a rack with plastic covering. Total size is about 4' long by 2' wide and the pan is about 2 feet of the floor on the rack and my perlite is below the rack. I have a whole bag of perlite dumped into a plastic container the perlite is about 3" thick. But Im not getting any humidity. I soaked it and drained it ans still nothing. Any ideas whats wrong?

I'm sure your humidity isn't 0%. How is the air movement? How are you measuring the RH? Perhaps you should try a shotgun FC. A full bag of damp perlite will keep that in the correct range for months.

The cakes are on a plastic tray and the tray is sitting 2 feet off the ground on a metal perferated rack. The metal rack has a clear plastic sheeting cover draped over it with the cakes and the perlite. The perlite is in a clear plastic tray sitting on the floor about 2 feet below the cakes. The perlite is about 3-4 inches deep in that plastic tray. So every thing is in an enclosed enviroment. Such as a tent!

If you have 3" of rinsed, then well drained perlite, your humidity should be in the mid to upper 90's. Make sure the perlite is fluffed up and not packed down tight. This allows more surface area for moisture to evaporate from. Get a proper hygrometer and calibrate it before using, to know for sure. RR

You need to make sure your tray is overtop of the perlite and that there is no leaks, perlite works by evaporating under tempature if its not sealed around your cakes properlly it means theres to much airflow and its keeping your humidity low.

There's your problem. I was assuming you were using a tote type terrarium. If you're trying to humidiy a mini-greenhouse with perlite, you're going to have a hard time. It will help, but not enough. Get a rubbermaid tote and build a simple terrarium. what you have has too much cubic footage for the perlite to keep up with. With perlite, you want the cakes sittig on a jar lid placed on the perlite. Humidity is highest within 6" of the surface of the damp perlite. RR

I think you got it, RR. I'm really still not sure about the setup, but it sounds like a tray of perlite in a closet, with some cakes in a perforated tray two feet above the perlite, and only a loose tent over the whole works? Is the plastic sheeting sealed, meaning enclosing the cakes and perlite with no big leaks, or or we talking about it being somewhat open and exposed to the whole closet?
Much better to use a big rubbermade/sterlite/whatever box, as RR said, with the cakes directly above the perlite, not two feet away. I'd like to see a pic of the setup in question though, just to be clear on what the problem is.

I have used this same method for years but I used to have an older Vicks Cool Mist and it would soak the closet if I left it on full time. So I put it on a timer and it worked great. But that cool mist just quit working. So I went and bought the new style equivelent and it didnt humidify the tent at all. So I went back and got the higher quality Vicks Cool Moister Humidifier and it didnt work either. I cant figure it out. How did the old one work so well and these new one wont work at all? These new ones you cant see any water coming out of them. But my old one you could actually see the water droplets being sprayed out!

Here are some pics of my set up from a couple of years ago. I was growing pounds of shrooms with the same set up.

'New style' doesn't tell me anything. The humidifier in the picture above is what I use to humidify my greenhouse. They're still available. If you bought a wicking type humidifier that has a wet filter-type material submerged in the water, it won't work. You need the impeller type such as in your picture. RR

I have been to walmart, Target, Walgreens and CVS pharmacy and cant locate that humidifier. They all had 3 different humidifiers. I have tried 2 of the 3 and the 3rd is the Ultrasonic. None like that one?
